Apple is increasingly developing its projects related to artificial intelligence, and it seems that the next major step will be new AirPods Pro equipped with cameras. According to the latest information, the device is already in an advanced testing stage, and Apple aims to use it to create a more intelligent and contextual version of Siri. Instead of a classic voice assistant, the user would receive AI capable of "seeing" the surroundings and responding to what is around them.
AirPods are set to analyse the world around the user
The new cameras won't be used for taking photos or recording videos. Their main task will be to transmit visual information to Siri, which will allow her to better understand the user's situation. Apple is reportedly looking to enable users to ask questions about objects in front of them, receive smarter suggestions, or even create reminders based on what the headphones "see." In practice, this could work for instance while walking around the city, shopping, or cooking. Siri could recognise products, help with navigation, or suggest actions based on the surroundings. This is another sign that Apple wants to develop AI more towards a digital assistant operating in the background of daily life rather than a classic chatbot.
Apple battles privacy and battery issues
The biggest challenge for Apple remains privacy. The company reportedly plans to implement a special LED indicator to inform users and those around them when visual data is being sent to the cloud. This aims to alleviate concerns regarding continuous image analysis by AI. The second issue may turn out to be battery life. Adding cameras and AI features will likely increase energy consumption, and the headphones already have limited runtime on a single charge. Apple will need to find a compromise between new AI capabilities and maintaining a comfortable device runtime. According to leaks, the launch of the new AirPods was planned earlier, but was delayed due to issues related to the development of the new Siri and AI technology, which is partially based on Google’s Gemini models.
Apple is increasingly focusing on AI integrated with wearable devices. AirPods with cameras could become one of the most unusual products from the company in years and at the same time the beginning of a new generation of intelligent assistants operating in real-time.
