Xiaomi continues its dynamic expansion in the automotive market. After the electric sedan SU7 and the YU7 SUV, the company is preparing another family of vehicles, this time using an EREV powertrain. The manufacturer published the first details about the SkyNomad models even before the official unveiling of the new Kunlun platform. The new SUVs are meant to combine a long electric range with the ability to cover long distances without the need for frequent charging. Xiaomi is primarily targeting the premium family car segment. The full presentation of the new models will take place on July 30.

Xiaomi bets on an EREV powertrain and the new Kunlun architecture

The new SkyNomad family will be the first in Xiaomi’s lineup to use an EREV powertrain instead of a conventional battery electric vehicle. The Kunlun system pairs a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine producing 112 kW with an electric drive. The combustion unit does not drive the wheels directly, but generates electricity for the battery. According to Xiaomi, it runs on 92, 95, and 98 octane gasoline. The manufacturer claims a minimum fuel consumption of 5.7 L/100 km under the WLTC cycle after the battery is depleted. This design aims to combine the benefits of an electric car with the convenience of a gas-powered vehicle on longer trips. Xiaomi intends to compete mainly with Chinese manufacturers specializing in EREV vehicles, such as Li Auto and Aito. The company emphasizes that the new platform was developed for premium-segment family SUVs. The manufacturer will also offer an eight-year warranty or up to 160,000 kilometers on the powertrain. Maintenance checks will be required only every three years or after 30,000 kilometers from the initial service. Xiaomi expects these measures will increase the appeal of the new models. The official presentation of the Kunlun architecture will take place at the end of July.

SkyNomad to offer long range and several body styles

Xiaomi also revealed initial information about the individual models. The SkyNomad N90 Max is said to be equipped with two electric motors and a 76 kWh battery. The manufacturer states an electric range of 363 to 370 kilometers under the WLTC procedure. The vehicle will be available in both five-seat and seven-seat versions with a 2+2+3 seating layout. The smaller SkyNomad N70 Max will be offered with one or two electric motors and batteries of 52 or 76 kWh. Depending on the version, the manufacturer projects an electric range of 265 to 380 kilometers. Xiaomi also said that a prototype of the N90 Max has already logged more than 60,000 kilometers of road testing across various regions of China. The company has not yet disclosed prices or launch dates for the new SUVs. We also do not know the overall maximum range or the charging specifications. All missing details are expected to be presented at an event dedicated to the Kunlun architecture on July 30. That's when Xiaomi will showcase the full capabilities of the new SkyNomad lineup.

Skynomad Xiaomi Auto

Xiaomi is preparing another important step in the development of its automotive lineup. The SkyNomad family is set to combine the benefits of an electric powertrain with EREV technology, and the official presentation on July 30 will show whether the manufacturer can effectively compete with the leaders of this segment in China.
