LG uses several key display technologies. Here is their direct comparison, from the best to the most basic:
Technology | How does it work? | Who is it for? | Key advantages |
OLED | Each pixel emits its own light. No backlighting. | For movie lovers and premium gamers. | Infinite contrast, perfect black, excellent viewing angles, ultra-slim design. |
QNED | LED TV with backlighting (often Mini-LED) + Quantum Dot filter / PFS + NanoCell filter. | For bright living rooms, for HDR enthusiasts and gamers. | High brightness, wide color gamut, good viewing angles. |
NanoCell | LED TV + special LG NanoCell filter. | For those seeking better picture quality than basic 4K, but cheaper than QNED/OLED. | Clear and vibrant colors, better viewing angles than traditional TVs. |
UHD (LED) | Standard 4K LCD TV | For budget users primarily looking for Smart TV features. | Low price, 4K, great webOS system. |
Strengths (+) | Weaknesses (-) |
Leader in OLED technology (perfect black, contrast) | No support for HDR10+ format (LG focuses solely on Dolby Vision) |
One of the best choices for gamers (4xHDMI 2.1, 120/144Hz, G-Sync, Game Optimizer) | Risk of screen burn-in (only in OLED, though minimal with normal use) |
webOS + Magic Remote Control (intuitive, fast, convenient pointer) | Average LCD TVs that can be much weaker than Chinese competitors at the same price |
Attractive, slim design (especially OLED series) | No support for DTS audio format (in the 2025+ TV series) |
Wide viewing angles (both in OLED and NanoCell with IPS panel) | |
5-year warranty on G and M series TVs |
In short: in the LCD -LED category (QNED vs Neo QLED), Samsung usually wins in terms of picture quality, offering better contrast and deeper blacks (thanks to VA panels) and better image algorithms, while LG (with IPS panels) only has better viewing angles. In the OLED category, the competition is even: Samsung (QD-OLED) offers slightly more vibrant and brighter colors, but LG (WOLED) has a wider price range and key support for Dolby Vision, which Samsung lacks.
Comparison Category | LG TVs | Samsung TVs |
Main LED Technology | QNED / NanoCell (usually IPS panels) | QLED / Neo QLED (usually VA panels) |
Key Advantage in LED | Better viewing angles | Significantly better contrast and deeper blacks |
Main Premium Technology | WOLED (proven, excellent black) | QD-OLED (excellent black + more vibrant colors) |
Key HDR Format | Dolby Vision | HDR10+ |
Smart TV System | webOS (with Magic Remote control) | Tizen (fast, good integration with devices) |
Offer / Price (OLED) | Wider range, lower starting prices | Narrower range, usually more expensive |
This clash is fascinating because in OLED TVs both companies often use the same panels produced by LG Display. The difference, therefore, lies not in the panel but in its "brain" (processor), sound, and software. Historically, LG has been a leader for gamers, being the first to offer full support for HDMI 2.1 and an extensive gaming menu. Sony, on the other hand, focuses on cinema enthusiasts and purists, offering reference image processing (especially motion smoothness) and absolutely the best built-in sound straight from the screen. LG is typically more aggressive in pricing, while Sony positions itself as a premium brand that comes at an additional cost.
Comparison Category | LG TVs | Sony TVs |
Panel (OLED Matrix) | Manufacturer (LG Display) | Purchasing from LG Display (Same matrix) or from Samsung Display |
Image Processor | Alpha (α) | Cognitive Processor XR |
Sound | Good (WOW Orchestra support) | Usually the best on the market (e.g. Acoustic Surface - screen as a speaker). |
Smart TV System | webOS (with Magic Remote) | Google TV (huge app library) |
For Gamers | Leader in gaming features (4x HDMI 2.1, 144Hz, Game Optimizer) | Very good, but often "a step behind" LG in feature implementation. |
Price / Value | Very competitive. | Usually significantly more expensive in the same class. |
In practice – no. It's more of a myth from the past. Modern LG TVs have plenty of safeguards (automatic screen cleaning, pixel shifting, dimming of static logos). With normal viewing of movies, series, or gaming, the risk is minimal. The problem could only occur if you were to leave a static image (e.g. the same TV Info banner) on for 24 hours a day for many months.
Definitely yes. OLED models (especially the C5 and G5 series) are considered by many gamers to be the best TVs for next-gen consoles. They offer everything: full HDMI 2.1, 4K at 120Hz (and even 144Hz), support for VRR, G-Sync, and FreeSync, as well as a special "Game Optimizer" menu.
Mainly two things: design and brightness. The G5 series ("Gallery") is designed to be hung flat on the wall (often does not come with any feet). It usually has a panel with slightly higher peak brightness. The C5 series is the most versatile model with a standard stand, recognized as the best choice in terms of price to performance ratio.
Definitely OLED. The picture quality, contrast, and blacks in OLED are at a completely different, much higher level. QNED is still an LCD TV (albeit a very advanced one) that cannot completely turn off its pixels. The only advantage of QNED is its higher brightness, which may only matter in very sunny living rooms.
Yes, the webOS system has almost all the major apps. You’ll find Netflix, YouTube, HBO Max, Disney+, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, as well as Polish services like Player, Polsat Box Go, or TVP VOD. You do not need any additional Smart TV device. However, the current list of apps can change quite quickly, so we recommend checking the updated app list in our TV reviews.
In the vast majority but not all. It is standard in all OLED, QNED, and NanoCell models. Sometimes the cheapest, basic UHD series (e.g. UT7xxx) may come with a regular remote without pointer functions. It’s always worth checking the specifications of a specific model before purchasing.
For premium models (OLED, higher QNED) – not necessary, but worthwhile. The built-in speakers in slim TVs are at best "good." If you want the sound to match the cinematic quality of the picture (especially in action movies), a soundbar or home theater system will give you a completely new experience. LG also has WOW Orchestra technology, which connects the TV and LG soundbar speakers to play together.
LG currently promises the "webOS Re:New" program for its new TVs. This means that the models from 2024 (and newer) are guaranteed four major webOS system updates over five years (meaning the system you purchase will be updated to newer versions, e.g., from webOS 24 to 28). This is a significant positive change, as previously TVs rarely received new system versions after purchase.
It’s simpler than it seems:
OLED = Technology (could also be QNED, NANO, etc.)
65 = Size in inches
C5 = Main series (e.g., C5, G5, B5)
4 = Digit indicating modification/small differences in design or equipment, e.g., remote (e.g., C54 vs C55 vs C51, etc.)
L = Tuner designation (L stands for the European standard DVB-T2/S2/C)
A = Design or refresh year (may vary)
In short: YES, if you are buying an OLED TV.
If you're aiming for OLED technology, LG is absolute top tier. They offer amazing picture quality for movies and are considered the best TVs for gamers. Most importantly, they probably have the best price-to-quality ratio in this high-end class – it's hard to find a better OLED for that money.
BUT...
The difficulties begin with their LCD TVs (i.e., QNED, NanoCell, and cheaper models). Here, LG often falls short compared to the competition, even that from China (like TCL or Hisense). They typically use IPS panels, which have poor contrast, making blacks look just gray in dimly lit rooms. Even their more expensive Mini-LED models often handle backlight control worse than brands that make similar TVs for less money.
The LG G5 is a television that not only continues but also expands on what we loved about previous models in the G series. Instead of taking the beaten path, LG opted for a new Tandem OLED panel – and it was a stroke of genius. Picture brightness? Simply, F E N O M E N A L. HDR effect? Close to reference. Colors after calibration? Nearly perfect. Motion smoothness, low latency, and gaming features...

LG C5 is a very successful continuation, and in several aspects, even a step forward compared to last year's model C4. The biggest change is the noticeably higher brightness – for the first time in the history of the C series, the barrier of 1000 nits has been surpassed, which significantly improves the quality of the HDR effect. Both movies and shows look more dynamic because of this, and bright ...

LG QNED93A is a television that, at first glance, appears to be a solid step forward compared to previous LCD models from this brand. On paper, we get a lot: a significantly larger number of dimming zones, a 144 Hz refresh rate for gamers, support for all HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, and WebOS with a new Magic remote, which still ranks among the most user-friendly operating systems. The QN...

LG QNED91T is the only MiniLED backlit television from LG for 2024, drawing attention due to its innovative use of a VA panel. This is a definite departure from the previous standards of the Korean manufacturer in its top LCD televisions, which usually installed IPS/ADS panels. However, the effect is positive – the panel combined with local dimming offers really good contrast. Blacks are deep and ...
