LG Display is preparing to expand production of giant OLED panels. According to reports from China, the company, together with a state-owned partner in Guangzhou, will invest 1 billion yuan in an OLED module production line that will support panel sizes up to 111 inches. This could mean the return of exceptionally large OLEDs to the premium TV market.
OLEDs up to 111 inches
As reported by OLED-Info, LG Display and the state-owned Guangzhou Development Zone Holding Group have agreed to recapitalize the joint venture with one billion yuan, about $150 million.
The investment is intended to enable the development of OLED module production in 77, 83, 97 and 111-inch sizes. According to Chinese reports, the line dedicated to the largest variant will be the first such installation in the world.
It is worth noting, however, that this concerns an assembly line for OLED modules, not a new factory producing the panels themselves. This expands production capacity, but it is not yet confirmation that mass production of 111-inch panels has begun.
Will giant OLEDs hit stores?
LG Display already offered 97-inch OLED panels that hit the market in 2022. The new investment could therefore signal a return to that size and further increases in screen sizes.
Such large screens could be used not only in luxury TVs but also in commercial installations.
So far, no timeline for launching the new line, pricing, or a potential release date for TVs using 111-inch OLEDs has been announced.
