Can the winner of Game of the Year be predicted? According to Ben Starr, absolutely. The actor known, among others, from Final Fantasy XVI proposed a rather bold thesis that Marathon could take home the industry's most important award. And while it sounds like a joke, there is an interesting theory behind it that circulates among gaming fans.
“The Jennifer English Effect” – is it a case or a trend in the gaming industry?
It refers to the so-called “Jennifer English effect,” which is the theory among fans that games featuring Jennifer English tend to gain immense popularity and awards. The actress appeared in hits such as Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – productions that have truly dominated their years. It is this “common denominator” that has led players to see her involvement as a kind of quality mark.
Will Marathon benefit from this as well?
During a panel at the industry event, Starr jokingly stated that if this "rule" works, then Marathon has a good chance of success. Of course, reality is more complex – in the race for GOTY, gameplay, execution quality, and player reception matter. Especially since Grand Theft Auto VI looms on the horizon, which could dominate the entire year.
Does the "Jennifer English effect" really exist? It's hard to say, but one thing is for sure Marathon is already generating interest, and such theories only ramp up the hype.
