South Korea has approved a major research program aimed at developing OLED technology and next-generation displays. About $274 million has been allocated to the Advanced Display project, $207 million of which will come from the state budget. The initiative will launch in 2027 and run for seven years. South Korea hopes this will help it maintain a technological edge over increasingly strong competition from China.
Not just OLED. South Korea is already thinking about its successor
The program covers three key areas. Over OLED aims to improve the parameters of current panels, including color reproduction and energy efficiency. Cross OLED will focus on displays equipped with additional features, such as biometric sensors, and Post OLED on technologies that could replace current organic displays in the future.
There are also plans to create a research center in Asan, near Samsung Display's main production complex. The center will support the entire display development process, from design through testing of finished panels.
For the TV market, this is an important signal. New investments could accelerate the development of brighter, more energy-efficient, and cheaper-to-produce displays. However, concrete results will have to wait, because the project will only start next year.
