Walmart has officially unveiled the new Onn 4K Pro media player, which is intended to be a cheaper alternative to the Google TV Streamer. The device runs on the Google TV system and offers support for 4K, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and an Ethernet port, while being noticeably less expensive than Google’s equipment. Everything indicates that Walmart wants to strengthen its presence in the streaming market and compete with devices like Apple TV, Fire TV, or Nvidia Shield.
Onn 4K Pro offers Google TV and premium features at a lower price
The new Onn 4K Pro is priced at $60 and visually resembles a Google device. The hardware runs on Google TV, which means access to the same streaming apps, integration with Google services, and AI features based on Gemini. Walmart has also added some premium elements, such as a backlit remote, Wi-Fi 6, and support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. However, in terms of specifications, the device falls a bit short compared to the Google TV Streamer. The Onn 4K Pro uses the Amlogic S905X5M processor and has 3 GB of RAM, whereas the Google device offers 4 GB of RAM. Both devices, however, have 32 GB of internal storage. Despite this, Onn may be attractive for those looking for a more budget-friendly device with modern image and sound features.
Walmart is expanding its own line of streamers and is entering the Google TV ecosystem more robustly
In addition to the Pro model, the company also unveiled a cheaper Onn 4K stick. The device supports 4K resolution and HDR10 and HDR10+, although there are conflicting reports regarding Dolby Atmos support. The equipment is expected to cost around $40 and be one of the cheapest options with Google TV on the market. The new Onn devices are intended to partially fill the gap left by the discontinued Chromecasts and simultaneously compete with the most popular streamers on the market. Walmart is heavily focusing on integration with its own ecosystem and collecting data regarding users' viewed content and purchases. For some, this may be a drawback, but the low price and broad support for formats may ensure that the new devices quickly find their audience.
Walmart is increasingly boldly entering the streaming device market. The Onn 4K Pro looks like a cheaper version of the Google TV Streamer and may attract users looking for modern 4K equipment without spending a lot of money.
