The iPad Air will finally get OLED, and this could be the biggest change in years, but not without compromises.

Calendar 4/16/2026

It seems that Apple is finally preparing one of the most anticipated changes in its tablet lineup. According to the latest reports, the next generation of iPad Air is set to receive an OLED display, marking the end of the LCD era for this model. This is a significant change, especially since the Air has been something in between the basic iPad and the Pro version for years, and now it may significantly approach the higher tier.

OLED in the iPad Air changes everything

The biggest advantage of the new panel will be, of course, the image quality. OLED means deeper blacks, better contrast, and more vivid colors, which will be especially appreciated by those watching movies, working with graphics, or simply using the device on a daily basis. This is also a step toward standardizing Apple's offerings, as currently, only the iPad Pro features this type of display. With this change, the iPad Air could become much more appealing to those who want high-quality images but don’t necessarily need the most expensive model. If everything goes according to plan, the premiere can take place in the first half of 2027.

Cheaper OLED and no 120 Hz

However, not everything looks perfect. According to leaks, Apple is set to use a cheaper LTPS-type OLED panel instead of the more advanced solution known from the iPad Pro. In practice, this means that the screen will likely remain at 60 Hz, without support for ProMotion 120 Hz. For most users, this won't be a big issue, but gamers and more demanding users may notice the difference. This is also a classic Apple strategy to reserve certain features exclusively for the more expensive models, in order to maintain a clear distinction between the series.

iPad Air with OLED is a big step forward for Apple's mid-range, but the company will still maintain the boundary between Air and Pro.
