The upcoming generation of consoles is shaping up to be completely different from anything we've seen so far, but not everyone is convinced by the direction Microsoft is taking. One of the creators of Xbox openly criticized the design of the new console codenamed Project Helix, claiming that he is much more excited about what Valve is preparing with its returning concept of Steam Machine. That's a strong opinion, especially considering who is expressing it.
Steam Wins with Its Approach to Games
According to a former Xbox creator, the biggest problem with Project Helix is not the hardware concept itself, but the approach to games. Valve, he believes, should focus primarily on what is most important for gamers: interesting titles, a large library, and a friendly ecosystem. The Steam platform has been building its position for years through promotions, openness, and a vast number of available productions, which is crucial for many users. In comparison, Microsoft's actions seem less exciting. Even if Project Helix is meant to be a technically advanced hybrid device, it may struggle to convince gamers without the right offering of games. That’s why Steam Machine, even though it is still shrouded in mystery, generates more excitement, as it is backed by a platform that already offers immense possibilities.
A new generation may look completely different
Everything indicates that the coming years will bring significant changes in the world of consoles. Sony is reportedly working on a set that includes both a classic console and a handheld device, while Microsoft aims for a hybrid that combines different forms of gaming. Additionally, Valve may return to the hardware game with a new version of the Steam Machine. An intriguing piece of the puzzle is the fact that Project Helix may support various stores, potentially including Steam as well. If that happens, the situation could change dramatically, and Valve's advantage will no longer be so obvious. For now, however, all of this remains in the realm of leaks, and the final verdict will be given by gamers after the launch. One thing is certain: with prices exceeding $1000, competition will be exceptionally fierce.
The new generation of consoles promises to be a clash not only of hardware, but above all of ecosystems and approaches to gamers and this may determine the winner.
