TCL announced that its inkjet OLED production process is now stable enough that the company can speak of mass production. This matters because until recently printed OLEDs were more of a novelty shown at trade shows than something that actually ended up in regular devices.
The first displays are already on sale
TCL CSOT is currently producing IJP OLED panels on a 5.5-generation production line. They have already been used in, among other products, the 27-inch MSI Pro Max OLED 271UPJW12 monitor and selected Lenovo devices. The idea itself is interesting because, instead of traditional manufacturing methods, the OLED materials are deposited very precisely in a process resembling inkjet printing. Ultimately this is meant to simplify production and reduce its costs.
The real test is still ahead for TCL
For now the scale still isn't huge. The most important development will be the 8.6-generation T8 line, which should allow TCL to manufacture such panels much more widely. If everything goes according to plan, the OLED market could gain another serious player alongside LG Display and Samsung Display. And that's probably the most interesting part: printed OLEDs are slowly ceasing to be an experiment and starting to appear in real products.
