As reported by telepolis, American T-Mobile has announced the launch of the Live Translation service, which enables real-time translation of voice calls. The new feature operates directly within the cellular network infrastructure, rather than through an application or at the system level of the phone. This means that users do not need special hardware or devices with AI capabilities. The system supports over 50 languages, including Polish. This is a clear step towards utilizing artificial intelligence as part of the operator's core offering. The solution may change the way international calls are conducted.
How does Live Translation work?
The feature is activated during a call by entering the code 87. The system automatically recognizes the languages used by the speakers and translates the statements both ways almost instantly. The entire processing takes place over the T-Mobile network, which is why the service works even on basic phones without access to applications. It is sufficient that one party in the call is a customer of the operator and has signed up for the beta program. The other speaker can use any network.
Availability and Limitations
The beta program is free and aimed at subscription customers. Registration takes place through the T-Life app or the operator's website. At this stage, the feature does not include prepaid users or business customers. This is a testing phase intended to assess the stability and quality of the translation in real-world conditions.
Will the competition catch up?
So far, real-time conversation translation has been mainly associated with features in smartphones and AI headphones. T-Mobile is taking this capability to the level of telecommunications infrastructure. Analysts predict that operators like AT&T and Verizon will soon have to respond with similar services to avoid falling behind technologically.
Live Translation is an example of how operators are beginning to genuinely utilize artificial intelligence in their infrastructure. Translation conducted directly in the network eliminates the need to use applications and modern equipment. If the solution proves effective in practice, it could become a new standard in international communication. For now, it is an innovation available in the USA, but its significance could extend far beyond a single market.
