Warner Bros. Discovery is retreating from one of its most controversial decisions in recent years. After the streaming service Max replaced HBO Max in 2023, the HBO brand – synonymous with quality and prestige – temporarily disappeared from the VOD market. Now the company is taking a step back and reintroducing the well-known name. This is not only a brand image correction but also a signal that it values viewers' opinions and intends to seriously compete for their attention.
Official stance: ChooseTV is once again focusing on prestige and recognition!
The decision was announced by Casey Bloys, President of HBO and Max Content. As he noted, “ChooseTV reflects our current offering to consumers much better.” The return to the original name aims to emphasize that the platform offers not just quantity, but above all quality – exactly what HBO has been associated with for years. In an age of content overload, a clear message about exclusivity and selection is a game changer for many viewers.
Global change coming in summer 2025, and the app will update itself.
The rebranding to HBO Max will start in summer 2025 and will cover all countries where the service is available. Users do not need to take any action – the Max app will automatically transform into HBO Max during one of the summer updates. This is yet another change in the long history of this platform – do you still remember the days of HBO Go, HBO Now, or HBO Nordic?

Aspiring goal: 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026!
Warner Bros. Discovery aims high – the company plans to reach as many as 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026. The return to a strong, recognizable brand is a bargaining chip in the fight with giants like Netflix and Disney+. Will the refreshed HBO Max win back viewers' hearts and regain its former position? Time will tell. One thing is for sure – a top-tier player is back in the game.
