The PlayStation 5 has gained an unofficial ability to run games from the iconic PS2, even from original discs! All thanks to the PS5SX2 emulator, created by a modder operating under the pseudonym Sword. Interestingly, the software not only lets you run classic titles but can also enhance their graphics, even up to 4K resolution.
PS5SX2 is a special version of the popular PCSX2 emulator, adapted to run directly on the PlayStation 5. The latest update added support for original DVDs of PS2 games. After inserting the disc into the drive, the console can copy its contents into memory and launch the game.
PS2 games in 4K and 60 FPS? It's possible!
The emulator offers resolution scaling of up to six times, which can produce an image approaching 4K. It also supports AMD FSR, fixes for the 16:9 aspect ratio, and mods that allow 60 FPS gameplay in selected titles. However, not everything works perfectly. Demanding games may have performance issues, and PS5SX2 requires a modified, jailbroken console. So this isn't an official Sony feature available to all users. The standard PS5 drive also doesn't support PS2 games released on discs.
Interestingly, the emulator's creator doesn't intend to stop there. Sword confirmed he is also working on porting the RPCS3 emulator to the PS5, which could eventually enable running PlayStation 3 games, including disc-based ones.
