Used hardware is usually much cheaper than new. This time the situation is completely different. U.S. retailer GameStop has priced used and refurbished PlayStation 5 Pro consoles at nearly $1,400. That's as much as 55% more than the official price of a new console!
At the beginning of October, the price of a used PS5 Pro at GameStop rose from about $800 to $1,399.99. Meanwhile, the suggested retail price of a new console in the U.S. is $899.99. Interestingly, according to reports from Tom's Hardware, the increase was not a mistake. That was confirmed by a leaked internal message addressed to the chain's employees.
Why are the prices so absurd?
The main problem is the limited availability of the new PS5 Pro in the United States. The console has sold out at many major retailers, and listings at other stores were going for as much as $1,500. Rising memory prices may be affecting the situation, in part due to huge demand for components used in AI data centers. Another factor is interest in the upcoming GTA VI, which is scheduled for release in November.
