Sony is once again raising the prices of the PlayStation 5, and this time the scale of the changes is really significant. The price increases will affect all versions of the console, including the Pro model and PlayStation Portal. Importantly, the new prices will take effect shortly, so this is the last moment to purchase at the old price. This is another case in this generation where the hardware is becoming more expensive instead of cheaper. The reasons are well known, but for gamers, it still means one thing: be prepared for a larger expenditure.
PS5 is getting more expensive again
Sony has officially confirmed price increases for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. The new prices will take effect on April 2, 2026. The biggest changes include an increase of about 100 dollars or euros for the standard models and up to 150 dollars more for the Pro version. This means that the prices of consoles are now significantly higher than on the day of their release.
Since the launch in 2020, prices have already increased several times, but now they are reaching their highest levels. The Digital model, which once cost 400, is now approaching about 600, while the disc version is about 650. The change is even more pronounced with the PS5 Pro, which is nearing 900. In practice, this means that depending on the model, prices have risen by as much as several dozen percent compared to the launch.
Why Prices Are Rising
Sony explains its decision by economic pressure and rising production costs. Problems with the availability of components, inflation, and the situation in the global market make it difficult to maintain previous prices. This is surprising, considering that earlier crises, such as the pandemic, did not lead to such significant increases. However, the industry looks completely different now, and production costs are much higher.
If someone was planning to buy a PS5, this is actually the last moment to do it at the old price. After April 2, new rates will apply globally. Especially with major titles like Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, which may further increase interest in the console.
Until now, it was standard for consoles to decrease in price over time. Now the situation is reversing, and hardware is becoming more expensive even several years after its release. This shows how much the market has changed and how significant a role global factors play in the gaming industry. For gamers, this means one thing: affordable gaming on the new generation is becoming increasingly less realistic.
