New leaks regarding PlayStation 6 may cool down gamers' excitement a bit. Although there were earlier reports of up to a 10-fold increase in ray tracing performance, it turns out that many people misinterpreted those data. According to insiders, the actual performance increase in games will be much lower and more realistic.
10 times more power doesn’t mean 10 times more FPS
The biggest confusion stems from a misunderstanding of what exactly the increase in ray tracing performance is. It is just one element of image rendering, not the whole picture. Even if RT operates 10 times faster, other elements—like physics, AI, or classic graphics—still take up a large portion of frame generation time.
In practice, this means that instead of a 10-fold increase in frames per second, players may see a roughly 3-fold increase in FPS compared to PlayStation 5. It’s still a significant jump, but much more realistic and in line with how modern games operate.
Where PS6 Will Really Show Its Advantage
The new Sony console, however, may shine in more advanced productions. Games that heavily utilize ray tracing or path tracing will be able to take better advantage of the new hardware capabilities, resulting in a greater difference compared to PS5.
Nevertheless, even in such cases, one should not expect "magical" 10x FPS. Performance is always the sum of many elements, and ray tracing is just one part of the puzzle. This is an important lesson for gamers following leaks — marketing numbers often sound spectacular, but the reality can be more complex.
PlayStation 6 is shaping up to be a significantly more powerful console, but the real performance jump will be closer to 3x than 10x, especially in standard games.
