LG is not giving up on OLEDs, but in 2026 it will surprise with a new direction. The company announced that during the CES 2026 in Las Vegas it will showcase its first LCD television with Micro RGB backlighting technology. The information appeared in a press release, in which LG boasted about winning numerous CES Innovation Awards 2026.
“Among the awarded products is also a premium-class LCD television with Micro RGB technology” – reported LG Electronics.
OLED and LCD side by side
This means that LG – just like Samsung – plans to maintain two parallel lines of TVs:
OLED, still the flagship segment of the brand,
and advanced LCD with a new type of backlighting, which is intended to compete with solutions from Hisense, Samsung, and TCL.
What is Micro RGB?
“Micro RGB”, also known as RGB LED, is a modern backlighting technology that replaces traditional white LEDs with three separate ones – red, green, and blue.
This solution:
significantly widens the color palette (approaching the Rec.2020 standard),
provides better energy efficiency,
and more natural color reproduction.
This technology is expected to be the successor to miniLEDs – currently the most popular solution among premium LCDs.
Hisense and Samsung have already launched huge LCD TVs with RGB LED backlighting, and in 2026 they plan to release cheaper models. Sony will also join the game, and TCL has presented the first such panels in China – with a global premiere coming soon.
LG at CES 2026
LG also announced that its transparent OLED Signature OLED T won the Best of Innovation CES 2026 title – despite already being the main attraction at the expo the previous year. However, the company did not reveal details about the new line of OLEDs for 2026. The expo will also feature the 6K LCD monitor LG with Thunderbolt 5, previously shown at CES 2025.
The new Micro RGB LCD TV is a sign that LG is not limiting itself solely to OLEDs. The brand aims to compete in the premium LCD market, offering solutions that can realistically compete with the top models from Samsung or Hisense. CES 2026 promises to be exceptionally colorful – literally and metaphorically.
