Sony recently wanted to make a strong entry into the mobile gaming market, but everything indicates that this plan is falling apart. New information about layoffs, primarily affecting the mobile division of PlayStation Studios, is emerging. Additionally, studios are being closed before they have a chance to release any games. The company is currently not commenting on the situation, which only increases the uncertainty surrounding the entire project. More and more suggests that Sony's mobile expansion may be coming to an end.
Layoffs and Studio Closures
Sony, according to reports, has laid off about 50 employees from its mobile gaming teams. Additionally, the Dark Outlaw Games studio was recently closed before it could release its first title. This is a clear sign that something is going wrong with PlayStation's mobile strategy.
PlayStation Studios had an ambitious plan to bring its well-known franchises to smartphones. IPs like Horizon and Ratchet & Clank were in play. The problem is that the projects did not generate much interest, and the strategy itself seemed inconsistent. The mobile market is very demanding, and it's hard to compete in it without strong backing and a clear vision.
What about the announced games
Projects such as Horizon Steel Frontiers and Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble are now in question. There is a real risk that some of them will be canceled before release, especially if Sony is indeed scaling back investments in mobile.
It seems that Sony is starting to withdraw from the idea of conquering the mobile market and may return to focusing on what works best on consoles and major AAA productions.
