Electric cars charged in 6 minutes? CATL unveils a new generation of batteries

Calendar 4/22/2026

CATL has presented new technologies that could completely change the way we view electric cars. The most attention-grabbing is the third generation Shenxing battery, which the manufacturer claims can charge from 10 to 80 percent in less than 4 minutes, and nearly to full in just over 6 minutes. This speed is beginning to compete with traditional fuel refueling, which has so far been one of the biggest advantages of internal combustion vehicles.

Charging as fast as refueling

The new Shenxing battery is designed to work quickly not only in ideal conditions but also in harsh climates. Even at minus 30 degrees Celsius, it is possible to charge it to nearly full in about 9 minutes. This is a huge change, as low temperatures have been one of the biggest problems for electric cars. Additionally, CATL claims that the battery will retain over 90 percent of its capacity after 1000 charging cycles, which means that fast charging no longer has to mean faster wear.

Even greater range and new technologies

Besides Shenxing, the company also showcased the next-generation Qilin battery, which is expected to offer a range of up to 1000 kilometers on a single charge. Additionally, it is lighter than previous solutions, which improves the car's performance and reduces tire wear. CATL is also developing batteries for hybrids that can provide up to 600 km of driving on electric power alone, as well as sodium-ion batteries, which are set to enter mass production in 2026 and are better suited for extreme conditions.

New solutions from CATL show that the biggest problems of electric cars, namely charging time and range, are quickly starting to disappear. If these technologies go into mass production, the difference between electric vehicles and gasoline cars may cease to matter faster than many expected.
