Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, its latest flagship smartphones. The biggest changes concern the cameras, performance, and battery life. The 48 MP Fusion main camera has, for the first time in iPhone history, gained a variable aperture, giving users greater control over photos and videos. Performance is handled by the new A20 Pro chip built on a 2 nm process, paired with a more advanced cooling system. In Poland, prices for the new models start at 6,299 zł for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6,799 zł for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The variable-aperture camera is the biggest new feature of the iPhone 18 Pro
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max receive a 48 MP Fusion main camera that Apple calls the most advanced camera system in the history of its smartphones. It’s also the first iPhone camera with a variable aperture. The mechanism uses six laser-cut blades that smoothly adjust the opening. This lets the phone automatically adapt depth of field and the amount of light reaching the sensor. The maximum aperture is ƒ/1.48, which is intended to improve low-light image quality. Users also get the option to manually select four aperture settings directly in the Camera app.
Developers can additionally use the APIs Apple has provided to control the aperture range in their apps. A new computational image processing pipeline aims to deliver sharper, more detailed photos. Apple has also refined Photographic Styles, adding new options for texture and grain. For video, you can now add Cinematic mode effects after recording footage at up to 60 fps. Time-lapse mode can record in 4K and Dolby Vision HDR. The Audio Mix feature has been improved with new algorithms that enhance voice clarity and better isolate music. A new addition is Pro controls, which let you manually change aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, and use a histogram.
A20 Pro, cooling and battery are meant to deliver high performance
At the heart of the new models is the A20 Pro chip, manufactured on the latest 2-nanometer process. Apple increased its cache bandwidth by 50 percent compared with the A19 Pro. The SoC features a 6-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators and a 7-core GPU. According to Apple, the GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the solution used in the A19 Pro. The A20 Pro also uses a dual 16-core Neural Engine, for a total of 32 cores dedicated, among other things, to AI and computational photography. The new cooling system uses a vapor chamber inspired by solutions used in Apple's M-series chips. Its surface area is three times larger than the chamber used in the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple says this enables up to a 40 percent increase in sustained chip performance. The new smartphones also received the Apple-designed N1 chip responsible for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.
Also debuting is the Apple C2 cellular modem, which should provide more reliable connectivity using AI and consume 15 percent less power than the C1X. Battery life was a major focus, particularly for the larger model. According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro can play video for up to 34 hours, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max can reach up to 43 hours. The iPhone 18 Pro can be charged to 50 percent in about 15 minutes wired or in about 30 minutes wirelessly. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, five minutes of wired charging should be enough for about seven hours of video playback.
Reference Image, Dynamic Island and new features
Apple also introduced the Reference Image feature, designed to help verify the authenticity of photos taken with the iPhone 18 Pro. A special main camera sensor tags each recorded pixel, and the stored data can be converted into a tamper-proof reference image. It can later be compared with the primary photo in the Photos app to check whether the image has been altered. The feature could be useful in professional photography and photojournalism. Apple also highlights the importance of metadata and future support for the SynthID standard in identifying images generated or modified by AI.
The area occupied by Dynamic Island has been reduced, even though its capabilities have been expanded. The system can now display up to three live activities at once. Dynamic Island still supports Face ID, which is used for unlocking the phone and authorizing purchases. The new models run iOS 27, which introduces further personalization of the Liquid Glass interface.
Apple also lists new child-safety management features and updates to Handoff, which under certain conditions lets you seamlessly switch between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number. The smartphones will be available in four colors: black, silver, glacier blue and a new burgundy. They will be sold in 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB storage options.
