During the WWDC 2026 conference, Apple dedicated little time to the Apple TV platform, but that does not mean a lack of new features. The company officially announced tvOS 27, which is the next major update for its multimedia set-top boxes. This time, the main goal is to improve the speed and smoothness of the entire device's operation. The update also brings several new features for Apple Music, HomeKit, and system applications. However, all indications suggest that the most interesting new features may only arrive with the release of the new Apple TV 4K.
Apple focuses on system performance
After significant visual changes introduced last year, Apple has decided to concentrate on performance. According to the company, apps in tvOS 27 are supposed to launch up to 30 percent faster than before. Improvements also include the Control Center, which is expected to respond more quickly to user commands. The acceleration will also be felt by those using AirPlay and the HomePod smart speakers. The process of connecting devices is expected to be faster and more reliable. Apple has also improved the performance of Apple Music, reducing the time needed to start playing music. For high-quality sound enthusiasts, support for the Hi-Res Lossless format has been prepared, with quality reaching 24-bit and 192 kHz. The update also brings smart content downloading and reduced app sizes through more efficient management of language bundles. The company has also taken care of game controller settings, which are expected to offer greater configuration flexibility. The support for the Thread standard used in smart homes has also been improved. All these changes will make using ChooseTV more comfortable every day. Although some of the new features may not be spectacular, their impact on the daily operation of the device can be quite noticeable.
Music, podcasts, and accessibility gain new opportunities
tvOS 27 also brings a number of changes to multimedia applications. One of them is a completely refreshed Podcasts app. The new interface is designed to make it easier to browse both audio podcasts and video content. The app now includes additional sections related to Apple services. Users with smart home systems will receive the ability to control 4K recordings from cameras connected to Apple Home. An important novelty is also the improvements in accessibility. The system will allow adjusting text size not only in tvOS itself but also in compatible applications. Apple is also introducing automatic transcription of dialogues for subtitles and a function for translating subtitles into other languages. Support for Made for iPhone compatible hearing aids has also been expanded. As a result, their operation is expected to resemble the handling of AirPods, offering easier switching between devices. Many of these features may prove particularly useful for individuals using Apple TV as their main home entertainment hub. At the same time, some market observers believe that Apple intentionally reserved the most important novelties for a later presentation of the new Apple TV 4K model. There is speculation that the device may receive support for Apple Intelligence and more advanced features based on artificial intelligence.
tvOS 27 doesn’t bring a revolution, but focuses on what users most often expect: speed and ease of use. Apple has improved application performance, expanded multimedia features, and added new accessibility tools. However, everything suggests that this year’s update is merely preparing the ground for a new generation of Apple TV. Fall may bring significantly more novelties than were shown during WWDC 2026.
