Apple is once again heavily promoting the filmmaking capabilities of its smartphones. As part of the MAMI Select: Filmed on iPhone program, young creators from India have produced professional short films shot using the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The productions utilize features such as cinematic mode, ProRes RAW, Action Mode, and advanced image stabilization and sound work capabilities.

Apple shows that the iPhone can replace a professional camera

A group of young directors participated in the project, creating stylistically diverse productions from romantic stories in nighttime Mumbai to surreal tales from Kerala or psychological dramas. The creators emphasized that the iPhone 17 Pro Max allowed them to shoot scenes that would normally require very expensive film equipment. The ability to record at night and the mobility of the device were particularly praised. Thanks to ProRes RAW, filmmakers could significantly enhance the image in post-production, increase scene brightness, and maintain natural colors even in very difficult lighting conditions. Image stabilization and Action Mode enabled dynamic handheld shots, recording on boats, or while running without using heavy stabilizing equipment.

AI, MacBook Pro and iPad aided in post-production

Apple strongly emphasizes the collaboration of its entire ecosystem. Creators used the MacBook Pro with the M5 chip and iPad Pro for editing materials, working on sound, and monitoring visuals on set. In some projects, AI features were also used for object tracking or speeding up special effects. Filmmakers point out that the greatest advantage of the iPhone is its accessibility. Instead of renting very expensive cameras, emerging creators can record professionally looking materials with a device they have with them every day. According to program participants, this opens up entirely new opportunities for young independent cinema.
