Apple has released a new update for its streaming devices. tvOS 26.4 is rolling out to Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K, introducing several significant changes, including a new audio feature aimed at addressing one of the more annoying issues. However, the biggest novelties are not available to everyone.
Continuous Audio Connection improves sound
The most important change is Continuous Audio Connection, which is a feature that maintains a continuous audio connection. In practice, this means the end of problems with audio dropouts, crackling, or sudden changes in volume. The system operates by transmitting audio as uncompressed PCM (Dolby MAT), which provides a more stable signal and more predictable behavior when switching between different audio formats. However, it's worth knowing that this does not automatically mean Dolby Atmos for everything. If the hardware shows Atmos with regular content, it is most likely misconfigured. This feature only works on newer models, namely Apple TV 4K (2nd and 3rd generation), and requires a compatible audio system.
End of iTunes and New Features in the System
Apple is finally removing the old iTunes apps, which have long been practically dead. Now all content is being consolidated into one app, Apple TV, which simplifies system usage. There is also a new Genius section that is intended to offer personalized movie recommendations. However, for now, this feature is not yet fully functional in all regions. Additionally, there is a new subtitle panel that allows for easy changes to font, size, colors, and background without leaving the content being played. Apple is also adding standard performance and stability fixes to enhance everyday use.
tvOS 26.4 is an update focused on details, but very practical ones. Better sound quality, tidying up the system, and new personalization options can realistically improve the user experience. The most benefits will go to Apple TV 4K users, but even older models are getting a few useful enhancements.
