Apple Podcasts with video. HLS changes the way you watch and listen to podcasts.

Calendar 2/18/2026

Apple announces a major change in Apple Podcasts. Later this spring, the app will receive support for video podcasts in HLS technology, a streaming solution the company has been developing for years. Users will be able to easily switch between listening and viewing modes, launch full-screen mode in landscape orientation, and download content for offline playback. The update is expected to work smoothly over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. This new feature will be available on iPhones, iPads, and Apple Vision Pro. It is one of the biggest steps in the platform's development in years.

HLS in Apple Podcasts. What does it change for users?

The new video format based on HTTP Live Streaming will allow for dynamic adjustment of video quality to network conditions. Video episodes will be fully integrated with the existing features of the app, including recommendations and thematic sections. The most important thing, however, is that users will not have to choose between audio and video. A podcast can be started as a video material and then switched to listening without interrupting playback. Materials can also be saved for offline viewing.

New Opportunities for Creators and Advertisers

The introduction of HLS also means business changes. Creators will have the ability to dynamically insert video ads, including host-read formats. Apple announces that it will not charge for the mere publication of podcasts, whether it concerns RSS/MP3 or HLS video. In the future, the company will begin charging ad networks for views of dynamic video ads in the app. The new standard will be supported from the start by Acast, ART19, Omny Studio, and SiriusXM, among others.

The feature is already available in beta for iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4. The official rollout for all users is planned for spring. Video podcasts will also be available in the web version of Apple Podcasts.

Apple is introducing video podcasts in a way that is meant to be a natural extension of the existing experience, not a revolution that forces a change in habits. HLS gives creators more control over monetization, while providing users with a more convenient way to engage with content. This is a signal that podcasts are entering a new phase by combining audio and video in one cohesive ecosystem.
