Apple has introduced the second generation of its flagship over-ear headphones – AirPods Max 2. While the design remains visually true to the original, key changes have occurred inside the device. With the use of the H2 chip, the headphones have gained features previously known only from the smaller Pro models, as well as entirely new capabilities based on Apple Intelligence artificial intelligence.
H2 Chip
The most important new feature in AirPods Max 2 is the H2 chip, which has replaced the aging H1 unit. According to Apple, the new architecture has allowed for a 1.5 times increase in the efficiency of active noise cancellation (ANC) compared to the first generation. The computational audio algorithms are now said to handle low frequencies more effectively, such as engine noise or chatter on a train.
Along with the new chip for headphones came intelligent features: Adaptive Sound, which seamlessly switches between ANC and Contact modes depending on the environment, and "Conversation Detection," which automatically mutes the music when the user starts to speak. The Voice Isolation mode has also been improved, which, with the help of more sensitive microphones, is designed to cut background noise more precisely during phone calls.
USB-C, lossless audio, and support for creators
Apple was forced to unify the charging standard. The Lightning port was abandoned in favor of USB-C. Importantly, this port is not only used for power – when a cable is connected, the headphones support 24-bit lossless audio.
A new feature (not yet available in Poland) is Live Translation, which operates within Apple Intelligence and allows communication in foreign languages directly through the headphones. For podcasters and vocalists, a studio-quality audio recording mode has been prepared, and the Digital Crown now has a camera remote function, allowing remote shutter release on the iPhone. The headphones also received a Gaming mode, which minimizes latency in transmitting the wireless signal on iOS, macOS, and iPadOS.
The AirPods Max 2 headphones are priced at $549 (2,499 zł). Orders can be placed starting from March 25, and the product will be available for regular sale at the beginning of next month. The new generation is available in five colors: space gray, silver, orange, purple, and blue.
