Microsoft is developing the disc-to-digital feature, which allows owners of physical copies on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S to obtain a digital licence for the title. According to tracker XCT.live, compatibility of catalogued games is already over 80%. Ubisoft has even joined the programme. The disc-to-digital function is fairly simple: insert a compatible game disc into the console's drive. The rest happens automatically: the system recognises the disc and assigns the product to the account. The disc remains fully usable.
Over 80% of games are compatible
The share of compatible titles looks better than Microsoft might previously have suggested. Just two weeks ago the tracker XCT.live indicated compatibility of around 70% of catalogued Xbox One and Xbox Series games. It is now over 80%. The database contains almost 1,900 games, of which over 1,500 are marked as compatible with disc-to-digital. It should be noted, however, that the data do not come directly from Microsoft but from a community-run tracker, so these results are not confirmed by the source.
Thanks to Ubisoft getting involved, series such as Assassin's Creed, Just Dance and Far Cry have joined the disc-to-digital programme. The XCT.live database already includes numerous compatible releases of the French studio's games.
There's a catch
Disc-to-digital does not mean the digital licence is completely independent of the physical medium. Microsoft makes it clear that the console may later request confirmation that you own the copy. Moreover, if the owner uses such a disc to obtain a licence and then gives it to a friend or sells it, the new owner can use it to obtain their own licence. In that case the original holder loses their digital licence. This is, of course, protection against abuse by players.
For now the entire programme applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series games. Xbox 360 discs are not supported by this feature.
