Microsoft has published another instalment of the Xbox Indie Selects programme, in which each month it highlights the most interesting indie games available on the platform. In August 2026 the list included six titles representing very different genres, from relaxing adventure games and dark action RPGs to cooperative horror. Each was chosen by the ID@Xbox team as one of the most interesting releases of recent weeks.
Xbox backs six standout indie games
The August edition of Xbox Indie Selects demonstrates just how diverse modern indie games can be. Microsoft has selected titles that offer both quiet, emotionally driven narratives and demanding, action-packed experiences. Among the featured games are Deer & Boy, Hell Clock, D-topia, Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, Backrooms: Escape Together and Moss: The Forgotten Relic. Each of these games offers a completely different experience, so practically every player should find something to suit them. ID@Xbox emphasises that the list is not a ranking; all the titles were highlighted on equal terms. The common denominator is a high level of polish and the developers' inventiveness. Microsoft also encourages visiting the dedicated Indie Select Hub in the Xbox Store, where new collections and indie recommendations appear every week. This is another element of the company's strategy, which for years has strongly supported smaller development studios. As a result, users of Xbox consoles and PCs regularly gain access to fresh and unusual releases.
From moving stories to dark adventures and cooperative horrors
The featured games show how broad the indie segment is today. Deer & Boy tells an emotional story of a boy and a deer with almost no dialogue, relying on music, animation and atmosphere. A completely different proposition is Hell Clock, a fast-paced roguelite RPG inspired by Diablo and set in a dark interpretation of Brazilian history. Meanwhile, D-topia explores artificial intelligence and a utopian society, forcing the player to ask questions about freedom and human development. Fans of calmer titles might be interested in Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, which blends life-sim elements with a story full of friendly spirits and everyday activities. Those after stronger thrills get Backrooms: Escape Together, a cooperative horror based on exploring procedurally generated locations and teaming up with other players. The final highlighted title is Moss: The Forgotten Relic, a classic version of the previously known VR adventure starring the charming mouse Quill. Microsoft says that each of these titles offers its own unique style of gameplay and can pleasantly surprise even the most discerning players.
The August Xbox Indie Selects are a collection of six diverse indie games that showcase the strength and creativity of smaller development studios. Microsoft once again focuses on titles offering engaging stories, unconventional mechanics and fresh ideas, encouraging players to explore less obvious games beyond the biggest AAA releases.
