XBOX Ally X20 officially presented. The handheld has received an OLED screen and new features.

ASUS has officially expanded its family of portable gaming devices with the model XBOX Ally X20. The launch took place during the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Republic of Gamers brand and brought more changes than a typical anniversary refresh of hardware. The manufacturer focused on improving the most commonly criticised elements of the previous version of the device. Although there was no revolution in terms of performance, users can expect several significant enhancements that will impact everyday use of the device. ASUS hopes that the new version will help maintain competitiveness against the latest handhelds using Intel and AMD chipsets.

OLED Screen and New Components to Improve Gaming Comfort

The biggest novelty in the XBOX Ally X20 model is the use of a 7.4-inch OLED display. Compared to the previous IPS panel, gamers will experience significantly better contrast, deeper blacks, and more vivid colours. ASUS has maintained a Full HD resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, considering them an optimal compromise between image quality and performance. The manufacturer has fitted the new screen into a casing with nearly identical dimensions to the previous one. At the same time, the interior of the device has been redesigned to improve airflow. These changes have also included the cooling system, which is meant to dissipate heat more effectively during long gaming sessions. As a result, the casing temperatures are expected to be lower than in the previous version. Another significant improvement is the new joysticks using TMR technology. They replace the classic analog sticks that are prone to drift issues, which have frustrated users of many consoles and handheld devices for years. However, ASUS did not opt for a change in the processor. The device still uses the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip in conjunction with 24 GB of RAM. This means that the greatest benefits will be felt by those who pay attention to user comfort, rather than solely focusing on an increase in frames per second.

The manufacturer has refreshed the appearance and improved the ergonomics of the device

The new XBOX Ally X20 also stands out with its changed design. ASUS has implemented a transparent casing that allows a glimpse of some of the components inside the device. Characteristic elements include gold accents placed on the buttons and the rear part of the construction. The manufacturer has prepared special markings related to the 20th anniversary of the ROG brand. Even the cooling system components have been colour-matched to the commemorative style. Additionally, the XBOX logo is equipped with green backlighting. ASUS has also improved the ergonomics of the device. The buttons on the front now have a flatter design when pressed, which is intended to facilitate rapid thumb movements during gameplay. However, the most interesting change appears to be the new D-pad. The user can switch it between a four-directional and an eight-directional mode, which should particularly appeal to fans of fighting games and classic platformers. The set also includes ROG XREAL R1 glasses. When connected via USB-C, they can display a virtual screen with a diagonal of up to 171 inches at a resolution of 1080p and a refresh rate of 240 Hz. This solution is primarily aimed at those seeking more immersive experiences while gaming away from home.

XBOX Ally X20 is not a completely new generation of handheld, but it offers a number of improvements that users of the previous model were expecting. The OLED screen, new TMR joysticks, and improved cooling can significantly enhance the comfort of daily use. ASUS has also opted for a more striking appearance and additional features related to ergonomics. The greatest unknown remains the price, which could turn out to be very high. However, if the manufacturer prices the device appropriately, the new model could become one of the most interesting proposals in the segment of portable consoles for demanding gamers.
