MicroLED has for years been regarded as one of the most promising display technologies. However, at present few people can afford to pay hundreds of thousands of zlotys for a television. Intel is reportedly coming to the rescue, and its collaboration with AUO could shake things up.
Intel to cooperate with a display maker
According to Taiwanese reports, Intel is in talks with AUO, one of the major panel manufacturers. The companies are said to be discussing a new method of producing and integrating electronic circuits with a microLED substrate. Intel already holds a patent for a technology called "IC Package with Micro LEDs". It involves placing part of the integrated circuit directly in the glass substrate. Such a solution could, among other things, simplify panel construction and reduce production costs. What is interesting is that this technology could find applications not only in televisions and monitors, but even in other electronics.
MicroLED has many advantages
The technology is similar to OLED in some respects. Each pixel can emit light independently. That means very high contrast and excellent control of light output. MicroLED, however, has the edge in several important areas. Panels can reach very high brightness. They are also less prone to burn-in than OLEDs. On top of that they offer fast response times. Until now, the issue has been cost. Large MicroLED televisions can currently cost even hundreds of thousands of zloty.
Will prices fall?
A collaboration between Intel and AUO could help address one of the biggest challenges for the technology. So far there is no official confirmation from either company that a partnership has been struck. It is also unclear when any potential solutions would reach mass production. For now, an affordable microLED therefore remains a thing of the future. But who knows, we might still see a breakthrough on that front.
