During WWDC 2026, Apple officially unveiled a new generation of Siri based on artificial intelligence. The company is promising major changes in personalisation, contextual understanding and integration with apps. Many users have begun to wonder whether it is worth waiting for the iPhone 18 precisely because of these features. However, the latest reports suggest the differences between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 18 in terms of Siri AI will be very minor. This means the decision to buy the new model may hinge on entirely different factors.
Siri AI to arrive on both iPhone generations
Apple plans to make the new Siri AI available on all iPhones equipped with at least 8 GB of RAM. This means support will be provided not only to the iPhone 18 series, but also to the iPhone 17 and selected models from earlier generations. Users will be able to use features that understand personal context, analyse on-screen content and carry out more advanced commands across multiple apps at once. The new Siri will also offer intelligent responses, enhanced writing tools, image generation and photo-editing features. There will also be the ability to create personalised shortcuts and automations. According to available information, most of the new features will be identical on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18. That means users will not lose access to key AI features simply because they choose a cheaper model. For many people this could be important news, especially if they plan to buy a phone later this year. Apple apparently wants to avoid a situation in which artificial intelligence is available only on the most expensive devices. As a result, the new Siri capabilities should reach a much larger number of users. It is also good news for people who do not intend to replace their phone every year. In practice, Siri AI may prove to be a more universal service than an exclusive feature of a specific model. Apple is therefore focusing on broad availability rather than artificial restrictions. This approach could positively affect the reception of the company’s entire AI ecosystem, especially as competitors often reserve the most advanced features only for the newest devices.
iPhone 18 will have different selling points than artificial intelligence
Although Siri AI will not differ significantly between the two generations, the iPhone 18 is expected to offer several other improvements. The most commonly mentioned addition is a new processor manufactured using 2 nm technology, which should provide higher performance and better energy efficiency. There is also talk of more RAM and minor camera refinements. Such changes could translate into longer battery life and improved handling of demanding apps and games. For users who use their phone for work or mobile entertainment, this may be an important reason to choose the newer model. At the same time, it is hard to speak of a breakthrough comparable to an entirely new category of features. According to available information, the iPhone 18 will be more of an evolution of the current generation than a revolutionary device. That means many customers may opt for the iPhone 17, especially if its price is reduced after the successor is released. History shows that older Apple models often remain hugely popular precisely because of their favourable price-to-features ratio. If Apple maintains a similar strategy, the iPhone 17 could turn out to be one of the best-selling smartphones in its class, not least because it will provide access to almost all Siri AI features. For the average user, differences in everyday use may be difficult to notice. As a result, the purchase decision will depend more on price, battery or performance than on artificial intelligence itself. Siri AI may be an important addition, but it is unlikely to be the main reason to replace a phone, especially if most of its capabilities are already available on the iPhone 17.
The new Siri AI looks set to be the biggest update to Apple's assistant in years, but it won't be the sole reason to buy an iPhone 18. Most of the features will also come to the iPhone 17, so users interested in artificial intelligence don't necessarily need to wait for the next generation of smartphone. Whether to upgrade to a newer model will be decided more by performance, battery life and other hardware improvements than by Siri AI itself.
