Spotify wants to make it easier for runners to choose suitable music during their training. The company has announced a new Running Mode feature that automatically prepares a playlist matched to the planned intensity. The solution uses the user's musical preferences and the parameters of the selected workout. That means you no longer need to create playlists before every run. The feature is aimed at Spotify Premium subscribers and is currently available only in selected markets.

Running Mode creates a playlist tailored to your workout

The new Running Mode feature allows you to prepare a workout and its accompanying playlist directly in the Spotify app. Users can specify the duration of the exercise, the type of run, the music genre and the preferred tempo of tracks. There are 25 ready-made training templates to choose from, which can be further customised to suit individual needs. Available options currently include easy runs, interval workouts and pyramid sessions. Spotify also offers English-language voice prompts that provide guidance and motivation during workouts. The new feature is based on users' individual music preferences, so two people choosing the same workout may receive entirely different playlists. Running Mode uses Prompted Playlist technology, which analyses listening history and user instructions. According to Spotify, workouts are among the most common uses of this technology. This allows the app to prepare a playlist suited to a specific type of physical activity. The solution is intended to provide a smooth transition from dynamic tracks during the run to calmer compositions during the cool-down phase. All of this happens automatically once the workout parameters have been set. Spotify expects the feature will make it easier for users to plan activities without the need to manually search for suitable music.

Spotify returns to an idea from years ago

Running Mode is not Spotify’s first attempt at creating a feature for runners. More than a decade ago the company offered a solution that used a smartphone’s sensors to automatically detect running pace and choose music. However, that feature was discontinued in 2018. The new Running Mode works differently and does not analyse running pace in real time. Instead, the user sets the training plan and target pace themselves before starting the activity. Spotify also emphasises that the feature does not replace sports apps or training watches. Running Mode does not record route, distance or other activity-related metrics. Currently the feature is available only to Spotify Premium users on iOS. It has been launched in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden. The company has not yet said when Running Mode will arrive on Android devices or other markets. However, the feature’s availability may be expanded in future.
