Spotify has announced the introduction of special badges for verified podcasts. The new badges are intended to help users distinguish genuine creators from content generated by AI or impersonating popular hosts.

Spotify responds to the issue of voice cloning by AI

A new label will appear in the form of a light green verification mark visible by podcasts in the search engine and on show pages. Spotify admits that the development of artificial intelligence has significantly facilitated the creation of podcasts, but it has also led to an increase in the number of false content using cloned voices of well-known creators. The platform announces that podcasts using AI to impersonate other people without consent will be removed from the service. Spotify will grant the labels gradually. To receive a badge, a podcast must meet several requirements, including having an active and authentic audience and not violating the platform’s rules. The company also announces additional safeguards against artificial inflation of listens by bots.

Spotify emphasises that podcasting is primarily based on the relationship between the listener and the host. The emergence of realistic voice clones generated by AI may significantly impact both creators and audiences, who are increasingly facing challenges in distinguishing genuine material from falsehoods. Similar actions are also being initiated by other technology companies, including Google and OpenAI, which are developing verification systems for AI-generated content.

Spotify is introducing labels for verified podcasts to combat impersonation of creators using AI. The platform is also announcing the removal of podcasts that utilise unauthorised voice cloning.
