Skatesterre is a new skateboarding game that emphasises fast-paced action and the vibe of classic arcade titles. Developers Headup and Goon Squad aimed to bring back the distinctive sense of freedom found in older skateboarding games. Professional skater Sterre Meijer played an important part in the game's development. Her style and experience helped give the game greater authenticity. The creators focused on easy-to-master controls, an extensive combo system and plenty of freedom while skating. Skatesterre is now available on Xbox Series X|S, allowing players to return to the golden age of virtual skateboarding.

Classic arcade skateboarding with a modern twist

From the start, the creators of Skatesterre wanted to recreate the freedom and flow of classic skateboarding games. Inspirations included Skate or Die, Dave Mirra, Grind Session and the early entries in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. Unlike more realistic sports simulators, the new title is meant to be easy to pick up and enjoyable from the first minutes. Players should quickly feel like a pro skater, pulling off flashy tricks with an intuitive control system. At the same time, simple fundamentals lead into more demanding gameplay for those wanting to improve their scores. An important element is the system for chaining tricks into long combinations, which lets you build ever-larger score multipliers. The game lets you perform, among others, kickflips, grabs, manuals and grinds, then link them into impressive sequences. Levels are designed to encourage finding your own lines and discovering hidden routes. The developers also used the capabilities of the Unreal Engine, adding modern solutions that enhance the gameplay experience. However, everything has been geared towards making the riding fast, smooth and satisfying. According to the team, the main aim was to create a title that, after finishing one run, will make you want to start another immediately.

Sterre Meijer gives the game her own style

One of the most important elements of the project is the collaboration with professional skateboarder Sterre Meijer, also known as Surfsterre. The developers felt that her approach to skateboarding perfectly suited the character of the production. From the start Sterre had input on the appearance of her character and how her style would be presented. The team paid great attention to detail and at one point even rebuilt a significant part of the character model. This was done to ensure the character would be as an authentic portrayal of a real skateboarder as possible. Her approach to skateboarding also inspired the overall artistic direction of the game. Skatesterre is intended to be colourful, laid-back and slightly unconventional, rather than attempting to mimic a single, definitive image of professional skateboarding. Players can experiment with lines, tricks and their own riding style. In addition to completing missions and racking up high scores, players can also unlock new clothing and gear for Sterre. Levels offer ramps, rails, jumps and hidden paths that can be used to build increasingly spectacular trick combinations. The whole is rounded out by a dynamic soundtrack inspired by skate punk and skate rock, designed to evoke the atmosphere of classic early-2000s games. Skatesterre is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, and its main aim remains to provide simple enjoyment from riding, experimenting and continually improving players' scores.

Skatesterre is a nod to the golden age of arcade-style skateboarding games. The game emphasises intuitive controls, impressive tricks, extensive combos and plenty of freedom while riding. Collaboration with Sterre Meijer is intended to give the game an authentic character and its own identity. The title is already available on Xbox Series X|S.
