Konami and studio Screen Burn Interactive have revealed further details about Silent Hill: Townfall. The upcoming instalment of the cult psychological horror series will offer fresh ideas while retaining the franchise's distinctive atmosphere. The game is set on a remote Scottish island, where fog and silence are as important as the monsters. The developers have also chosen a first-person perspective and new gameplay mechanics. In an interview, they also revealed behind-the-scenes details of the game's creation and the development team's inspirations. The title will arrive on PlayStation 5 at the end of September.
Scotland, FPP view and a new device replacing the iconic radio
Silent Hill: Townfall is being produced by the Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive, known among others for the games Stories Untold and Observation. According to series producer Motoi Okamoto, the choice of that team was related to its experience in creating narrative horror games. The developers decided to set the action in Scotland because they are very familiar with the local landscapes and climate. The dense fog present in that region naturally fits the character of the Silent Hill series. For the first time a full-fledged instalment in the series will use a first-person perspective. The developers emphasise, however, that this decision was not inspired by the game Silent Hill: The Short Message, because the two projects were developed independently. An important gameplay element will be the CRTV device, which will replace the distinctive radio known from earlier entries. The new hardware not only receives sounds but also analyses video signals and can be used during exploration and stealth. According to the creators the entire game was built around the possibilities offered by the CRTV. Analogue technology will also play a significant role and is intended to build an atmosphere of uncertainty and unease. The developers admit they attached great importance to the faithful reproduction of older devices and the surrounding environment. All these elements are meant to reinforce the distinctive atmosphere of psychological horror.
Multiple endings, DualSense and a greater emphasis on atmosphere
Silent Hill: Townfall will offer several different endings depending on the player's actions throughout the game. The developers emphasise that the finale will not be decided by a single choice made at the end of the game. Three main endings can be unlocked during the first playthrough, while a secret ending will appear after completing the game. The title will also make use of the DualSense controller's features on PlayStation 5. Adaptive triggers and haptics are intended to convey, among other things, the weight of weapons and the footsteps of approaching enemies. The game will also support gyroscopic control for aiming and for solving certain puzzles. According to the developers, sound will play an especially important role given the first-person perspective and the limited field of view. Players will need to listen closely to environmental sounds to detect threats hidden outside their line of sight. The developers also promise various playstyles, allowing players to choose between combat and stealth. All these solutions are intended to ensure that Silent Hill: Townfall preserves the atmosphere of the series' classic entries while introducing new ideas. The game's release on PlayStation 5 is scheduled for 24 September.
Silent Hill: Townfall promises to be one of the most intriguing instalments of the cult series. The Scottish setting, first-person perspective, new mechanics and expanded use of the DualSense controller's capabilities aim to deliver a fresh yet still faithful to its roots psychological horror experience.
