The display industry is developing at a rapid pace, and manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to improve image quality. Samsung Display is among the companies that regularly unveil solutions that set new directions for the market. This time the company has revealed two advanced projects that could be used in future generations of devices. They include a record-bright micro-OLED panel designed for XR headsets and a new version of glasses-free 3D display technology. Both solutions show what the displays of the future might look like.
Micro-OLED with a brightness of 40,000 nits could change the XR headset market
One of the most interesting new products presented by Samsung Display is a new 1.3-inch micro-OLED screen. The panel achieves an impressive brightness of 40,000 nits, which represents a huge step forward compared with previous generations. By comparison, many current devices using this technology offer brightness several times lower. Such high luminance is particularly important for augmented and mixed reality headsets. In these devices a large proportion of light is lost through the optical system, so manufacturers need ever-brighter displays. Samsung is focusing on RGB micro-OLED technology, which does not require additional colour filters. This allows the panel to offer higher luminous efficiency and improved lifespan.
The manufacturer also emphasises the benefits for colour reproduction and image sharpness. All of this is hugely important for future XR headsets, which must deliver high visual quality while remaining compact. Just two years ago Samsung was showing panels reaching around 5,000 nits. A year later the company revealed a model offering 20,000 nits. Now the bar has been raised even higher. Such rapid progress shows how fast the display segment for immersive devices is developing. In future this could translate into significantly better experiences when using augmented and virtual reality.
Glasses-free OLED 3D in new version offers even better picture quality
The second technology presented by Samsung Display is an improved OLED screen that shows three-dimensional images without the need to wear special glasses. The manufacturer has been developing this solution for several years and clearly does not intend to abandon this direction. The new generation of panel has been fitted with user eye-tracking technology, which allows the spatial effect to be better matched to the viewer's position. As a result the image is said to look more natural and convincing. Samsung has also increased the resolution of the 3D effect from around 2K to 2.4K, which should translate into a sharper picture. At the same time it has been possible to significantly reduce image leakage between the individual depth layers. The manufacturer says the level of so-called crosstalk has been reduced to just one percent. This is a very important change, because that problem has for years limited the development of glasses-free 3D technology. The first people who had the chance to see earlier prototypes noted a much better quality than with current 3D LCD monitors. Samsung has not yet revealed plans to commercialise the new panel. It is therefore unknown when the technology might reach laptops, tablets or consumer monitors. The very fact of continued investment shows, however, that the company still sees potential in spatial imaging. If development continues at a similar pace, it is possible that in the coming years we will see the return of 3D technology in a much more modern form.
