Samsung Display has taken another important step in the development of OLED displays for portable computers. The new A6 factory has started mass production of panels that are expected to be destined primarily for Apple’s future MacBooks. This will be a particularly significant moment for the Cupertino-based manufacturer, as it marks the start of the transition of Macs from LCD to OLED. The first MacBook fitted with such a display could appear as early as the end of this year or in early 2027.
Samsung begins production of OLED panels specifically for Apple’s future MacBooks
The new Samsung Display A6 factory started production this summer and, according to available information, was set up primarily with Apple orders in mind. Samsung won the contract to supply panels for the first OLED MacBook, despite competition from LG Display. The first Apple computer with an OLED display could be the next generation MacBook Pro, although there are also reports suggesting the MacBook Ultra name might be used.
Samsung plans to produce about 2 to 2.5 million OLED panels for Apple in 2026. The factory uses Gen 8.7 substrates measuring 2250 × 2620 mm and Fine Metal Mask technology. The company does not intend to stop at the current production level. In the coming years the factory’s capacity is to be increased, and Samsung Display wants to use the additional production space to supply OLED panels to other computer manufacturers as well.

The panel being prepared for the MacBook looks very interesting. According to current reports, Apple will use Tandem OLED combined with an IGZO driver panel. This solution could enable higher brightness, perfect blacks, a variable refresh rate and better energy efficiency. The technology should also have a positive effect on the screen's durability. Apple may also offer a feature MacBook users have been waiting for years: a touchscreen. The company has already used Tandem OLED in the iPad Pro, where the technology was presented as one of the most advanced display solutions. There are also reports that Apple is considering using the BT.2020 colour space, which would offer a wider colour gamut than the currently used DCI-P3, although it is not yet known whether the solution will make it into the first OLED MacBook.
Samsung increases OLED production as the entire PC market quickly shifts to new displays
The A6 plant is already the third Gen 8 OLED facility to begin mass production in 2026. In June the Chinese company BOE took a similar step, starting production at its B16 plant. BOE plans to expand its production capacity later this year, and TCL CSOT may begin producing printed OLED panels at its T8 plant before its full opening scheduled for 2027. According to Counterpoint Research, OLED development is becoming one of the most important directions across the display market. About 73 percent of this year’s investments in display production are expected to go to OLED, while LCD’s share fell from 32 percent in 2025 to about 24 percent in 2026. It therefore looks set that OLED will increasingly move beyond smartphones and TVs in the coming years, reaching laptops, tablets and other devices as well.
Samsung Display has opened a new A6 factory that is set to play a key role in producing OLED displays for future MacBooks. The first model could appear around the turn of 2026 and 2027, marking an important shift in Apple's computer lineup. The new panels could offer significantly better image quality, higher brightness and greater energy efficiency than current LCD screens.
