At this year's Gamescom, Samsung unveiled a new generation of Odyssey monitors that could seriously surprise even the most demanding gamers. The most eye-catching is the Odyssey OLED G6, capable of reaching as much as 1100 Hz after lowering the resolution to HD. But that's not the only interesting model, as the manufacturer has also prepared new OLED monitors offering high resolution and extremely fast refresh rates. Among them are the 32-inch Odyssey OLED G8 and the ultrawide Odyssey OLED G9. All these designs show that Samsung intends to significantly boost the capabilities of gaming monitors in 2027.
Samsung cranks refresh rate up to an absurd level
Samsung used Gamescom to showcase several new Odyssey OLED monitors that are set to reach gamers in 2027. The most unusual model is the Odyssey OLED G6 G60H. The monitor uses a Fast IPS panel with a 1440p resolution and comes standard with a 600 Hz refresh rate. That figure is aimed primarily at the most demanding gamers who prioritise maximum smoothness. Samsung has gone even further and allows lowering the resolution to HD. In that mode the refresh rate can rise to 1100 Hz. That’s the highest such figure Samsung has shown in a monitor to date. The model also supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and is compatible with Nvidia G-Sync. However, such a high refresh rate will make sense mainly in very demanding use cases where a computer can generate an enormous number of frames per second. Samsung has also prepared larger models for those who place more value on screen size and image quality. The Odyssey OLED G7 is a 42-inch curved 4K OLED screen with a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz. The manufacturer has used a pronounced 1000R curve to enhance immersion while gaming.
OLED G8 and G9 show Samsung is not focusing solely on 1100 Hz
In the new lineup there is also the Odyssey OLED G8, equipped with a 32-inch 4K OLED panel. The monitor offers a base refresh rate of 360 Hz, but its capabilities do not end there. When switched to 1440p the refresh rate can rise to 520 Hz. In Full HD mode the user can get up to 680 Hz. Samsung has used its latest-generation QD-OLED panel with Penta Tandem technology in this model. An RGB stripe subpixel layout has also been implemented, which is intended to improve text sharpness, energy efficiency and panel longevity. The monitor is equipped with DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 and two HDMI 2.1 ports. A USB-C supporting power delivery of up to 98 W and a USB hub with KVM functionality are also provided. Fans of ultrawide screens may be interested in the new Odyssey OLED G9. This model offers a 49-inch panel with a 5120 × 1440 resolution and refresh rates of up to 360 Hz. Like the G8, it also supports a multi mode, allowing up to 720 Hz at 2560 × 720 resolution. Samsung also highlights the G9's high brightness, which can reach 1300 nits under certain measurement conditions.
At Gamescom, Samsung showed several monitors that clearly target the most demanding gamers. The Odyssey OLED G6 G60H stands out primarily for its ability to reach 1100 Hz when switched to a lower resolution. The G8, meanwhile, offers 4K at 360 Hz and several additional modes that improve smoothness, while the ultra-wide G9 can reach 720 Hz. The new models show that monitor manufacturers are increasingly experimenting with extreme refresh rates. For now, however, the question remains how many gamers will be able to make full use of their potential.
