Samsung Display has unveiled a new generation of OLED screens using M16 materials. The showcased smartphone panel can reach up to 10,000 nits peak brightness. It's an impressive figure, but it applies only to a small portion of the image, not the entire display surface.
As FlatpanelsHD reports, the 10,000-nit result was achieved in a window covering 1% of the screen, while the declared full-screen brightness is 2,800 nits. The showcased panel has a 6.9-inch diagonal, a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels and a variable refresh rate from 1 to 165 Hz. Samsung Display, in a statement about its collaboration with iQOO, confirms the development of a 2K screen with a 165 Hz refresh rate for the iQOO 16. The new design aims to combine high brightness with better power efficiency.
The M16 shows how rapidly mobile OLEDs are evolving, but those specifications should not be directly extrapolated to televisions. Samsung Display uses a different architecture for large panels: QD-OLED. For now, then, this is a huge achievement in the smartphone market!
