Asobo Studio revealed new details about Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy during the latest episode of the official Xbox podcast. The developers spoke about Sophia, the combat system, the game's world and the reasons they decided to change the series' established formula so dramatically. The new title will retain the distinctive atmosphere of A Plague Tale, while also offering far more action and greater freedom in combat. The game's release is now very close, as Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be released on 27 August.

Sophia replaces Amicia, and the series gets a completely new combat system

After finishing work on A Plague Tale: Requiem, the Asobo Studio team felt that Amicia and Hugo’s story had been closed. The developers still wanted to expand the A Plague Tale universe, so they began considering a protagonist who would allow them to create a more dynamic title. They quickly settled on Sophia, who players had already met in Requiem. The creators felt her personality and backstory were a great fit for a game focused more on combat. Unlike Amicia, Sophia does not primarily have to avoid enemies, because she can confront them directly. The protagonist wields two blades, can parry attacks and perform quick dodges. Her movements are intended to be very fluid and responsive, so combat should feel more like fast-paced action games than previous entries in the series. Sophia can also use a grappling hook, a dagger and throwable items to hurl at opponents. The developers wanted to create scenarios in which a single heroine can face a larger group of foes. At the same time, Sophia is not particularly resilient and can be defeated after a few strong hits. This makes combat risk-based, as the player must react quickly and seize opportunities to counterattack. Asobo Studio drew inspiration from, among others, Ghost of Tsushima, but during production repeatedly tested its own solutions to adapt them to the character of Resonance.

Minotaur, Greek mythology and an increasingly darker world

One of the most distinctive elements of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be its incorporation of Greek mythology. Promotional materials feature, among other things, the Minotaur and a labyrinth, which has become one of the game's key motifs. However, Asobo Studio does not intend to faithfully recreate well-known myths but uses them as a foundation for its own story. The developers wanted to combine real locations and historical events with fantastical elements. This should make the game's world feel believable, even though it contains creatures and events from legend. An important element will also be Sophia's journey through beautiful Mediterranean locales. In contrast to previous instalments, the start of the game is intended to be much more colourful and full of light. One of the locales is Venice, where players can admire, among other things, the Grand Canal. The creators emphasise, however, that the beautiful surroundings are primarily meant to build contrast with what Sophia will discover later. The deeper Sophia delves into the island, the more unsettling her surroundings will become. Sound will also play a significant role and is to be directly linked to the meaning of the word Resonance. Asobo Studio says that both the title's emotional resonance and its connection to sound will be important to the story. Players will find out everything at the game's release on 27 August.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set to be the most dynamic instalment in the series, as Asobo Studio has decided to replace stealth with a significantly expanded combat system. Sophia is a completely different heroine from Amicia and has been designed for fast, aggressive encounters where parries, dodges and the effective use of available tools will be important. At the same time the developers are not abandoning the dark atmosphere characteristic of A Plague Tale, but this time they build it through the contrast between beautiful, sunlit locations and increasingly unsettling events. Greek mythology, the Minotaur, a labyrinth and the mysterious significance of the title are intended to further set the new story apart. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will debut on 27 August on Xbox Series X|S, PC and on Game Pass.
