Asobo Studio does not intend to simply create another game in the vein of A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is meant to be much more action-oriented and focused on direct combat, while still preserving the distinctive atmosphere of the series. The creators have also decided to use an entirely new setting and story, so the game will not be a traditional A Plague Tale 3. At the centre of events is Sophia, a heroine who will allow the studio to show the series' world from a completely different perspective.
The developers wanted to move away from the classic A Plague Tale and aim for a much more dynamic gameplay
After the story told in A Plague Tale: Requiem ended, creating a direct sequel was not the best option for Asobo Studio. Hugo’s fate led the team to consider the story from the previous games closed, so instead of making another instalment focused on the same characters they decided to look for a new direction. At the same time the team grew very fond of Sophia, who had previously been a supporting character. Her much more active and aggressive personality fit perfectly with the idea of a game in which combat will play a much bigger role. Resonance will therefore retain the series’ distinctive elements, but in terms of gameplay it is meant to be far more dynamic. Players will be able to use dodges, parries and direct attacks, and will also have greater freedom of movement around the world. Sophia can, among other things, climb almost anywhere and use a grappling hook that lets her reach heights of up to 10 metres. This is a big change from previous entries, where movement options were far more limited and often depended on specific spots placed by the developers. The change of formula also affected level design, the script, the dialogue and the way events are presented. Asobo wanted to create a story slightly lighter than before, though it will still contain the series’ trademark dark themes, emotions and difficult choices.
A mysterious island, the legend of the Minotaur and a brand-new take on the world of A Plague Tale
One of the biggest challenges during development was creating a place that had practically not existed before in the series' world. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will take players to a mysterious island inspired in part by Minoan culture. Unlike the previous games, which were more firmly based on real places and events, this time Asobo had to design an entire civilisation, the environment and the rules associated with it. On the island, Sophia will have to solve puzzles, fight enemies and uncover secrets tied to her past. Macula also remains an important element of the story, the mysterious plague known to fans of the earlier instalments, although this time it is presented in a new form. The creators wanted to preserve its significance for the universe while showing it from a different angle. The game will also feature fragments of events from ancient times that will intertwine with Sophia's story. Added to this are puzzles based on manipulating light, exploration, chases and enemies that will force the player to keep moving. Despite numerous changes, Asobo does not intend to abandon the series' visual identity. We will still see the distinctive, painterly landscapes, dense fog and striking lighting that have become some of A Plague Tale's most recognisable elements. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be released on 27 August 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. Thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere, a purchase will allow you to play on both console and PC.
