Razer has unveiled the Prio controller designed for gaming on smartphones. The device connects directly to the phone via USB‑C and mounts on both sides of it. The gamepad’s biggest advantage is its foldable design, which when folded takes up roughly as much space as a credit card. Despite its small size, Razer has not abandoned the classic layout of buttons and analogue sticks. The controller is already available for purchase priced at $99.99.
Razer Prio folds to the size of a credit card
Razer Prio was designed primarily for people who want to have a phone controller with them at all times. During play its construction unfolds into two parts that sit on either side of the smartphone. After a session both parts can be folded, significantly reducing the space the device occupies. The manufacturer states that when folded Prio has an area similar to a credit card. Its dimensions are only about 10 to 15 mm larger in width and height than a standard card. However, it should be remembered that the controller is, of course, considerably thicker. That should make the design easier to store than classic, non‑folding mobile controllers. Razer gives the device's weight as 101 grams. In terms of how it operates, Prio does not differ much from other controllers intended for smartphones. The phone is placed between the controller parts, and the connection is made via a USB-C port. This solution avoids the need to use an extra cable while gaming. The main difference, then, is the construction itself, which is intended to make transporting the controller easier. That is particularly important for people who do not want to carry a large controller while travelling.
Classic buttons and sticks on board
Despite its compact design, the Razer Prio offers the set of controls known from larger controllers. The shell houses low-profile analogue sticks, a D-Pad and A, B, X and Y buttons. There are also dual bumpers and triggers, so the user gets a full basic set for modern games. Razer has fitted the analogue sticks with contactless sensors. According to the manufacturer, this solution helps avoid problems with stick drift. The controller is designed to work with both Android smartphones and iPhones. The Prio uses a USB-C connection, so compatibility also depends on the phone having a suitable port. The design aims to combine transport-friendly compact dimensions with a button layout reminiscent of full-size controllers. The device is priced at $99.99. That is exactly the same as the Razer Kishi V3. Prio is already available in Razer’s online store and via Amazon. The manufacturer therefore began selling the device immediately after its unveiling.
