PlayStation has revealed the most downloaded games in June. A horror title dominated the competition.

Sony traditionally summarised the past month by publishing a list of the most downloaded games on the PlayStation Store. The ranking covers titles for PS5, PS4, PS VR2 and free-to-play games. June brought a few surprises, and topping the lists was a horror inspired by the internet phenomenon Backrooms. The popularity of this title proved greater than that of many high-profile releases. It shows that players are increasingly opting for less obvious titles as well.

Escape the Backrooms has conquered the PlayStation Store

The biggest winner of June was Escape the Backrooms, which took first place in the download charts for PlayStation 5 in both Europe and the United States and Canada. Close behind were titles such as 007 First Light, EA Sports FC 26, UFC 6 and NBA 2K26. In the European rankings, Grand Theft Auto V, Gothic 1 Remake, Resident Evil 4 and Forza Horizon 5 also placed highly. Sony notes that the Backrooms theme dominated not only classic games but also titles made for PlayStation VR2. Among the most popular VR titles were, among others, Escape - Backrooms Horror VR and other games inspired by that atmosphere. June's results show that players are keen on horror games and titles focused on co-operative play. At the same time, well-known sports brands and the biggest AAA series are also performing very well. The chart confirms that genre diversity remains one of the PlayStation Store's greatest strengths. Sony publishes these lists every month, showing actual player interest in each release. This makes it easy to see which games are most popular worldwide.

Fortnite still strong, but competition is not letting up

Sony also published charts for PlayStation 4 and for free-to-play games. On the older console, the best-selling title was Red Dead Redemption 2, ahead of Gang Beasts, Batman: Arkham Knight and Star Wars Battlefront II. In the free games category, Fortnite topped the North American chart, while Goals took first place in Europe. The top lists also included Roblox, Rocket League, Call of Duty: Warzone, eFootball and Marvel Rivals. In the PlayStation VR2 ranking the most downloads were recorded by I Am Cat. Beat Saber, Job Simulator, Metro Awakening and Arizona Sunshine VR 2 also placed highly. June's chart shows that players still readily return to both major hits from years past and to new releases. At the same time, free-to-play titles remain popular and are one of the most important parts of the PlayStation ecosystem. Sony will publish the next chart after the end of July.
