Development of OLED screens is accelerating, and Samsung Display’s latest achievement could set a new industry standard. The company has announced it has begun shipping panels that offer over 700 nits of sustained brightness across the entire display. This level was, until recently, largely the preserve of LCDs. The new panels were developed primarily with laptops in mind, but the technologies used could in future make their way into other devices. The manufacturer boasts not only higher brightness but also longer display lifespans. The first laptops featuring the new panels are set to debut in the coming months.

New OLED panels set a brightness record and receive VESA certification

Samsung Display has announced the introduction of the first OLED panels meeting the requirements of the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. This means they can sustain more than 700 nits of full‑screen brightness and exceed 1400 nits of peak brightness when displaying small bright image elements. At the same time, the displays maintain a very low black level of 0.0005 nit. The manufacturer has used a new tandem OLED architecture that employs two light‑emitting layers. This solution increases luminous efficiency without the need to raise power consumption. According to Samsung Display, it allows higher brightness while reducing the load on individual panel layers. The result should also be a noticeably longer display lifespan. The company claims that under typical laptop use the new panels can offer more than twice the longevity of conventional single‑emissive‑layer OLED designs. Full‑screen brightness exceeding 700 nits means OLED now surpasses most LCD panels used in monitors, laptops, televisions and tablets. This is an important step for a technology that for years has been criticised for lower brightness. The new achievement demonstrates how quickly the OLED display segment is evolving and could influence future generations of premium devices. VESA certification also confirms this is not merely a marketing claim by the manufacturer.

Asus, Dell and MSI are already adopting the new displays, and Apple may follow

Samsung Display unveiled new panels at the K-Display 2026 trade show in Seoul. The company confirmed that Asus, Dell and MSI will be the first manufacturers to use the new displays. The next-generation Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition was also among the first devices to be certified DisplayHDR True Black 1400. More laptops using this technology are expected from the second half of this year and into 2027. There is also industry speculation about a collaboration with Apple. According to earlier reports, the company is preparing its first MacBook with an OLED display. It has not, however, been officially confirmed that it will use Samsung Display’s new panels. There are also reports that future Apple devices may support the BT.2020 colour space, but these remain unconfirmed. If other manufacturers adopt the new panels, OLED could replace LCD even faster in the premium segment. Increased brightness and longer lifespan remove some of the biggest limitations of the technology. All signs point to the coming years being a period of rapid development for OLED screens.
