The new method of producing OLED screens could significantly reduce the prices of future monitors, laptops, and televisions. According to analysts from Omdia, printed OLED panels created using inkjet printing technology could be as much as 30–35 percent cheaper to produce than current OLED screens.
Printed OLEDs are expected to be much cheaper than current panels
Currently, most OLED screens are made using Fine Metal Mask (FMM) technology, which is costly and requires a very precise manufacturing process. The new method using inkjet printing aims to simplify the entire process, reduce material waste, and lower the costs of machinery and maintenance of production lines. Analysts from Omdia state that, for example, on a single large production surface, it is possible to create more 16-inch OLED panels than with current technology. Additionally, the production requires a smaller amount of OLED material, which further enhances the overall cost-effectiveness of the entire process.
TCL is already preparing its first next-generation factory
The strongest efforts on new technology are currently being made by TCL through the TCL CSOT division. The company is already building the world's first factory for printed OLED panels and plans to begin mass production later this year. Initially, the new screens are expected to be used mainly in monitors, laptops, and tablets. However, experts predict that in the future, the technology may also be used for large OLED televisions. The industry has been searching for ways to further reduce the costs of OLEDs, which, despite price declines, still remain significantly more expensive than traditional LCD screens.
Printed OLEDs could become one of the biggest changes in the display market in many years. If the new method truly reduces production costs by as much as 35 percent, OLEDs may reach cheaper monitors, laptops, and televisions for ordinary users more quickly.
