No Man’s Sky has just reached an impressive milestone, as the Hello Games title celebrates the tenth anniversary of its release. The title, which began as an ambitious project by a small team, has undergone a huge transformation over the years. The developers emphasise that the game today is many times larger than at launch and still attracts an active community. Over the decade, nearly 40 major, free updates have been added to No Man’s Sky, significantly expanding the possibilities of the space sandbox. Most importantly, Hello Games suggests this is not the end of development for one of the most extraordinary science-fiction games of recent years.

Ten years of No Man's Sky and almost 40 major updates

Sean Murray, founder of Hello Games, recalls that the early days of No Man's Sky looked completely different from today's version of the game. Initially only four people worked on the project, attempting to create a production of vast scale. The team's inspiration was primarily classic science-fiction literature and the distinctive, colourful covers of books in the genre. The creators wanted to move away from an image of science fiction associated solely with grey, military conflicts and to emphasise colour, variety and the sense of discovering the unknown. One of the most important goals was to create a world in which a player could wake up on a planet that no one had seen before, not even its creators. Over time individual planets began to form a vast, procedurally generated universe, allowing players to travel freely between star systems. Over the past ten years the game has added, among other things, animals, mechs, living ships, expeditions, settlements, vehicles, base building and further reworks of worlds. Each of these updates gradually transformed No Man's Sky into a far more expansive game than the version that launched in 2016. Significantly, the vast majority of those major expansions were made available to players at no extra charge. Today No Man's Sky is therefore an example of a game that has been consistently developed over years rather than left in its original form.

One galaxy, millions of stories and further development

One of No Man’s Sky’s greatest strengths from the start has been the ability to experience your own story in a vast, procedurally generated world. Players can focus on exploration, trading, combat, base building or peacefully travelling through successive star systems. The game includes, among others, traders, fighter pilots, freighter captains and people who prefer to avoid conflicts with Sentinels and pirates. Those who favour a more aggressive playstyle can develop their arsenal, upgrade their ships and prepare to fight upcoming opponents. Hello Games sought from the outset to combine the vastness of the universe with more personal experiences for individual players. Some can admire alien planets alone, while others build bases with friends and set out into the unknown together. Murray emphasises that over ten years the community has created countless personal stories and memories connected to the game. The developers also openly say they would like to continue that journey for as long as they still enjoy coming up with new ideas. Another requirement is an engaged and positive community that continues to want to take advantage of new opportunities. No Man’s Sky thus shows how much a single game can change over a decade, and its 10th anniversary looks more like another stage of the journey than its end.

No Man’s Sky celebrates ten years on the market, and Hello Games has reason to be pleased. The game has undergone a huge transformation and received almost 40 major updates. Today it offers, among other things, exploration, combat, trading, base building, vehicles, mechs and playing with friends. The developers emphasise that freedom remains paramount, along with the ability to create your own stories in a vast galaxy. All signs point to No Man’s Sky’s space journey continuing for a long time to come.
