Is GTA 6 best played on the PS5? Rockstar and Sony launch a joint campaign

Calendar 7/15/2026

The release of GTA 6 is fast approaching, and Sony and Rockstar Games have launched an unusual marketing campaign. Both companies insist the upcoming title "runs best on PS5", even though it is not an exclusive. The statement has sparked debate among players, especially since the Xbox Series X has very similar processing power to the PS5.

Rockstar bets on PlayStation ahead of GTA 6 launch

The slogan "GTA 6 plays best on PS5" appeared on Rockstar Games' official website, the studio's social media and PlayStation channels. Sony emphasises that players will get additional experiences thanks to the DualSense controller, whose adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are said to better convey the action during gameplay. The company also highlights the use of the controller's built-in speaker, which is intended to increase immersion during certain events. Another key part of the promotion is Tempest 3D Audio for spatial sound, and the PS5's fast SSD, which reduces loading times. Sony argues that this will make Leonida's world more realistic and smoother to explore. In practice the campaign is designed to encourage players to choose PlayStation as the platform to play one of the most important titles of this generation. It is worth stressing, however, that this is not an exclusivity deal, and GTA 6 will also arrive on Xbox Series X and Series S. The joint promotion could, however, further weaken Xbox's position, which has been facing problems and restructuring for months.

Will the PS5 really offer a better version of the game?

Despite marketing claims, it is hard to expect major differences between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Both consoles offer very similar performance, so experts predict almost identical graphics and visual effects. Xbox also supports Dolby Atmos, so some audio features will not be reserved exclusively for the PS5. Sony’s biggest advantage remains the capabilities of the DualSense controller, which Microsoft’s pad does not offer. According to analysts at Digital Foundry, GTA 6 will likely run at 30 frames per second on both PS5 and Xbox Series X. The reason is said to be the limited CPU performance of current-generation consoles, not the graphics chips. It is possible that the PS5 Pro will receive a special 40 FPS mode for 4K 120 Hz TVs with HDMI 2.1, but Rockstar has not confirmed this yet. We will probably learn more technical details closer to the game’s release, scheduled for 19 November 2026.

Rockstar and Sony have launched a strong campaign promoting GTA 6 on PlayStation 5, emphasising the advantages of the console and the DualSense controller. However, it appears that in terms of graphics quality the differences between the PS5 and the Xbox Series X will be minimal. Final comparisons will only be possible after the game's release.
