Gamescom Opening Night Live once again delivered plenty of new details to players about upcoming titles. This year's show was especially interesting for PlayStation 5 owners, as 19 games heading to the PlayStation 5 were showcased. Among them were both major franchises and brand-new projects. Some releases are already very close, while others won't arrive until as late as next year.
Gamescom brought many big announcements for PS5
One of the show’s biggest games was Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, which will debut on PS5 on 27 August. Asobo’s production returns players to the world of the Plague Tale series, but this time it places a much stronger emphasis on dynamic combat. New footage was also shown from Control Resonant, in which Dylan Faden will have to face the chaos taking over Manhattan. The game has a release date set for 24 September. On the same day Silent Hill: Townfall will debut on PS5, another instalment in the popular horror series. The developers showed new gameplay clips and revealed the English voice cast. A lot of attention was also given to Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which is set to arrive in spring 2027. The new trailer showed, among other things, the powerful Weapons and Cloud and his companions’ journey aboard the Highwind. Fans of post-apocalyptic settings also received another piece of footage from Metro 2039, showcasing combat, weapons and exploration of the surface and underground. The game is due to hit PlayStation 5 in February 2027. Meanwhile Path of Exile 2 will receive the full 1.0 release on 11 December, bringing new campaign elements, endgame content, character progression and the loot system. Among the more interesting surprises were Rainbow Six Tactics, LEGO Skylines and Turok: Origins.
New worlds, horrors and major returns
Gamescom Opening Night Live also showcased several titles that had been much less known until now. Ontos, the new game from the creators of SOMA, received its first extended gameplay showing and again leans on strong horror and an unsettling atmosphere. Tides of Annihilation also looks intriguing, combining fast-paced clashes with a fantasy world inspired by Arthurian legend. Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons will offer third-person action-adventure, an open world and combat that uses forbidden magic. Players were also shown a new trailer for Turok: Origins, which will debut in spring 2027. Strategy fans may be interested in Rainbow Six Tactics, as the game transfers the series’ distinctive elements to turn-based gameplay. A more unusual title is Mewgenics, a tactical roguelite focused on breeding and modifying cats. The game will arrive on PlayStation 5 on 8 September. Even earlier, on 16 September, Aniimo will debut, an open world RPG with creature collecting. Among the presented games was also Exodus, whose release has been scheduled for 7 April 2027. The showcase was rounded out by Acornia: Mirror Worlds, Ananta, Exterminauts, Valor Mortis and the Enhanced update for Crimson Desert.
Gamescom Opening Night Live proved to be a very strong showcase for PlayStation 5 owners. 19 showcased games made it clear that Sony has a very varied slate of upcoming releases. Some titles, such as Resonance and Silent Hill: Townfall, won't be long in coming. Others, including Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Exodus and Turok: Origins, won't arrive until 2027.
