Mozilla has released another version of its web browser, introducing several practical new features. The most important of these is built-in Containers, which make it easier to separate private activity from work activity. The feature was previously only available as the Multi-Account Containers extension, but it has now been integrated directly into Firefox. This allows users to manage multiple accounts more conveniently without having to switch profiles or use private browsing. The update also includes improvements to video playback, PDF editing and security. Firefox 153 is already being gradually rolled out to users of the browser's stable version.
Built-in Containers help separate different online activities
The new Containers feature lets you open tabs in isolated spaces that do not share cookies, login credentials or site data. This lets you use multiple accounts on the same service simultaneously without them affecting each other. For example, a work Google account can remain completely separate from a personal YouTube account, and banking sites from online shops. Firefox offers default categories such as Personal, Work, Banking and Shopping, but users can also create their own Containers. Each gets its own name, colour and icon, making them easy to recognise. To open a new tab in a selected Container, simply right-click a tab and choose the appropriate option. The basic functionality is now integrated into the browser, so it no longer requires installing an additional extension.
Firefox 153 also brings HDR, better PDFs and new security features
Aside from Containers, Mozilla has prepared a number of other improvements. Firefox 153 enables playback of HDR content on Windows PCs with a compatible display and HDR support enabled. The browser also lets you share web pages using QR codes. The PDF editor has been expanded and can now merge documents and add images as new pages. A colour picker accessible from the address bar has also been added, along with experimental support for the JPEG XL format via Firefox Labs. Mozilla has also increased security. Extensions must now obtain separate permissions to access local files, and websites require the user's consent before connecting to devices on the local network.
Firefox 153 is an update focused on user convenience and security. Built-in Containers make it easier to separate work from personal life, and other additions, such as HDR, an improved PDF editor and new privacy protections, make the browser even more functional.
