Type-Moon has announced that Fate/Extra Record will debut worldwide on 28 January 2027. The game will be available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The title is a complete remake of Fate/Extra, released in 2010 and the franchise's first RPG. The developers have rebuilt not only the graphics and presentation but also the core gameplay system. The new version will feature a strategic Command Card Battles system based on building your own deck.
The War for the Holy Grail on the Digital Moon
The story of Fate/Extra Record is set after the discovery on the Moon of a powerful supercomputer known as the Moon Cell Automaton. The machine created the Holy Grail, an all-powerful device capable of granting any wish. This began the Moon Holy Grail War, a tournament held within the digital world SE.RA.PH. A total of 128 participants, known as Masters, enter the conflict. Each of them is accompanied by a Servant, a hero drawn from human history. Master and Servant must cooperate to defeat the other participants and claim the Holy Grail. The protagonist is a player who does not remember how they found themselves in the middle of the war. Their only chance of survival is to form a contract with a Servant and join the fight. An important part of the gameplay will be gathering information about opponents. Particular importance is attached to learning an enemy Servant's true name, as it can reveal their fighting style and potential weaknesses. Before the decisive duels the player will also have to explore further sections of the Arena. Each floor contains traps and enemies whose defeat will allow the player to strengthen their Servant. The climax will be a one-on-one duel between Servants commanded by their Masters. The losing Master loses not only the chance to continue in the tournament but also their life. The war continues until only one participant remains.
New card-based combat system
The biggest change in Fate/Extra Record will be a completely rebuilt combat system. In the remake, battles will use configurable decks of Command Cards. Players will have to build their own decks, choosing different types of commands. During fights there will be three basic types of cards in hand. Attack cards are used to deal damage to an opponent. Guard cards increase a hero's shield and help mitigate incoming damage. The third category is Skill Commands, which offer their own unique effects. The set of available commands will depend on the chosen Servant. That means an effective strategy can look completely different depending on the accompanying Servant. New cards can be obtained, among other ways, from chests found in the Arena. Another way to expand a deck will be by defeating powerful opponents. The system is intended to encourage experimentation with different configurations. Players will have to select actions from their hand depending on the current situation on the battlefield. The developers want to combine Fate's characteristic narrative with a more strategic form of combat. At the same time, the new system is intended to be more accessible to people who haven't previously played the original Fate/Extra. In Moon Holy Grail War players can choose one of three Servants, each with their own abilities, strengths and fighting style.
Editions and release
Fate/Extra Record will be available in standard digital editions on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Players will also be able to purchase a Digital Deluxe Edition. It will include a digital copy of the game and a set of additional cosmetic outfits. The Deluxe Edition will also include a special pack of arranged music from the original Fate/Extra. Additionally, players will receive digital versions of the art book and soundtrack that were prepared for the physical Limited Edition. Type-Moon thus aims to offer both a basic version for new players and a more comprehensive package for series fans. Fate/Extra Record will be the original RPG's first full return in a heavily reworked form. The remake will feature refreshed character models and a modern presentation. The developers have also expanded the story compared with the original. The most significant change, however, is the new Command Card Battles system. The game has been designed for both fans of the original and newcomers to the Fate universe. The release date has been set for 28 January 2027. The game will be released on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on that date.
Fate/Extra Record will be a full remake of the first RPG in the Fate series. The Type-Moon title will feature refreshed visuals, an expanded story and a completely new combat system based on building a deck of Command Cards. Players will once again take part in the brutal Holy Grail War in the digital world of SE.RA.PH, choosing one of three Servants. The game will be released on 28 January 2027 on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
