Disney+ is starting to lose some features in Europe. In Germany and the Netherlands, users can no longer cast films and TV series to their TVs via Google Cast, and the restriction also applies to AirPlay. The reason is yet another patent dispute Disney lost with InterDigital.
The changes are the result of a ruling by the Unified Patent Court on 2 September 2026. The court found that Disney infringed a patent related to transmitting multimedia content between devices. In practice, this means that it is no longer possible to cast video from a smartphone or tablet to a TV via Chromecast or AirPlay from the Disney+ app in Germany and the Netherlands. Importantly, the restriction applies to Disney+ itself, not to those features on the TV, so they may still work normally in other apps.
At the moment Poland is not subject to a block, and the native Disney+ app on Smart TVs, Apple TV, Google TV and consoles continues to work unchanged. The matter is worth keeping an eye on, because Disney's dispute with InterDigital has been ongoing for some time and previously involved technologies related to HDR and video encoding. If further rulings cover additional countries, similar restrictions could also appear in other European markets.
